How ’bout dem jobs numbers!!!!!!
Change you can believe in.
Ya think maybe you ought to be doing something different????????????
And that would be the responsibility of the private sector, you know, your all so perfect capitalist corporate world. Unless you’d like to see the president create more government jobs. No president is directly responsible for jobs, no matter what either side says about it.
What is the “doing something different” that he is supposed to do?
Not to mention that those statistics reflect jobs created, or not, in the past what? Past quarter, couple of months? This is the first time the job numbers have gone down in a while. The economy didn’t break in a year, or even 3 years, and it’s going to take more than that to fix it. There are going to be good months and bad months.
The whole world’s in economic trouble. It will be years in the fixing. I don’t like it, and I’m one of those people who can’t find a full time job, and have more to complain about. So if I can stand to be patient, people who have nothing to worry about, but where they are going to retire to, should be able to be a bit more patient, as well.
I saw the biggest set of hooters this morning on the A train that I’ve seen since the last time I was in NY Dolls. And there was no modesty in the cleavage
I like big boobs but when it’s that big where I need to be aware of where they are pointing etc cause I dont want to be knocked out by them then it’s not good anymore
The bull sh i t that’s going on in Washington which results directly in uncertainty on taxes, health care costs, etc, etc, etc is the primary reason that the economy will not rebound. No one is spending, no one is hiring.
There’s no policy in Washington. There’s no ability to form one.
The buck stops somewhere, right?
The release of the SPR was the biggest joke of the century.
Yes, I understand that and NO we DON’T want more government jobs.
So what could have and should have been done a long time ago was cutting taxes, specifically payroll taxes. What was done was too little too late and you are going to say that in 20/20 hindsight we can know this but MOST economists were calling for this back in 2009.
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE JOBS NUMBERS HAVE DISAPPOINTED.
The other issue is housing and the government’s handling of that has been a complete disaster.
If housing were to rebound, jobs would be created and fast. The government has no coherent policy on how to deal with the housing crisis.
Also, the whole world is NOT in economic trouble. Most countries in Asia are growing between 5-8%.
And if you don’t think the decline in the stock market today will have an effect on what people think about spending (especially those who spend the most) you need to take off the rose colored glasses
Aren’t you going to comment on my morning A train sighting?????
If we raise taxes there will be more jobs. Worked under Clinton.
Worked under Clinton.
So did Monica.
so they economy does better when presidents get mouth jobs from interns!
obama – get on it!
I wonder if Bush would have been less aggressive in foreign affairs if he had gotten more intern sex.
haha probably. i always associated bush’s actions with that of a person being a d i c k bc they are going thru cocaine withdrawls
hillary wanted to be president so put up with Bubba’s crap. Somehow, I think Michelle would kick Obama’s asssss and then contemplate castrating him
LOL, dh. you’re a funny one this morning. Please consider what the GDP growth was then vs. now.
Like I have said many time before, we should go back to the tax rates and government spending levels we had from 1990 – 2000.
The budget was balanced and the US economy had its longest expansion in history.
Lower taxes will drive the deficit much higher because neither side really wants to cut spending to any degree that will make a difference.
Democrats don’t want to cut spending at all, and Republicans only want to cut programs that go against their social agendas.
Exactly. Hammered it right on the head.
There’s an excellent article by Laura Tyson in today’s FT about what needs to be done. I can’t find an online link yet….
oh, i thought this was “correlation equals causation” day, reading your posts below
oh, man, i love that day!
BHS, you too fail to realize the difference in the economic situations then vs. now.
in other news, chicken and pizza joints in newark have to hire armed guards if they stay open past 9pm
I wouldn’t mind a fatter butt but not a fatter lip which is what I got slightly cause a big ass ant came out of nowhere and landed on the lip of my coffee cup. it bite, scratched, etc my lips when I went to take sip of coffee. thought this crap only happens to Rob
“thought this crap only happens to Rob”
lol! farking moonface ants.
i bet chris christie will find this saddening
I knew m4l would gravitate to the boobs story.
big boobs like that almost always look better clothed
not kidding. it hurts when a girl with big big boobs turns around and rams them into your eyes
At least they’re soft.
those bras holding them are not so soft
They should be!
“Ouch” is not what I expect someone to say when I put these babies into their face – said that girl
I would’ve enjoyed it if I was prepared and properly positioned for them but that’s was like a sucker punch – said me
I started to think about those Madonna metallic cones (or Austin Power’s Fembots!)
I like boobs that are a nice size, but once you get above a DD or so they move into the “unwieldy” range.
Flash mob at Cape Cod Stop & Shop…July 4 Band…
I find larger than ‘pretty small*’ boobs more freaky than sexy.
*I realize there are terms for measuring them, I just have no idea what they correspond to.
Who would buy fried chicken in Newark if you’re from Brooklyn???
I have a quick question for you guys; it’s too early for Legion but I am trying to help a young person in my family. He is struggling to launch his career, just finished a grad degree and was teaching as a substitute. He is 26, has no health insurance and needs some medical attention, which would likely require some expensive testing, though his situation is one of “management” and not an acute illness. I would like to wave a wand and get him an excellent job with health insurance, but alas, he is struggling to do that himself but in the meantime he needs medical care. He could buy the insurance but that would hit him even more financially and I am tryhing to figure out how one can get care of a specialist and get some tests without having to completely torpedo his finances.
Are there some recommendations (municipal hospitals?) health clinics, etc.
This is NOT a political question, just a practical one.
Boobs? Big or little, they’re all good. Good morning, PLUSAs!
hey DIBS, got some right wing porn for you here….Sarah Palin’s movie trailer…..
a laugh a minute!
Dona, that seems problematic. Any ER and clinic would accept him if there was a clear need, an acute situation but as for “testing” I think that’s a bit ore problematic.
Can you be more specific?
randi, you d u m b a s s, how long is it going to take you to realize I have no interest in female porn????
I bet dh will watch that over and over though!!!!!
its idea porn not sex porn.
You lead a sad, sad life.
i thought thats what you rethugs get off on.
I could not agree more. Someday I will read something on this site where randi says ONE THING, just ONE THING that is interesting, funny (well yesterday he was funny, not meaning to be I suspect), constructive, affirmative, pleasant or actually NICE to one person. If anyone has ever seen this, please please let me know. Oh, I remember once at the beginning of the year, he was lamenting his UTTER lack of popularity and that he was going to change his “troll” ways. Maybe he was drunk.
He was born with a defect to his gi system which was repaired at his birth, and when he was a kid he was monitored for this closely. Now as an adult he really needs the care of a gastroenterologist and a nutritionist. The GI person could ask for a GI series or even a colonoscopy (which is CRAZY expensive – my DEDUCTIBLE was 500 bucks). Until he gets on his feet professionally, I was thinking there might be some kind of community health
program where he could get an appt with such a specialist without breaking the bank.
Donatella, one of the PLUSAs told me about compassionate billing at the clinic at Lutheran Hospital. Also, I’ve had good luck with an internist at Plaza St. and Flatbush, but he’s not a specialist. Smart guy, good diagnostician, and great at finding good deals but not sure if it would help for someone whose needs are more complicated.
Thank you, rf, MM, arkady and Dave. I will check in later and that is a good idea about Legion. I suspect that the way to go is to find a Gastroenterologist and negotiate something. I may call my own internist who is at NYU downtown, who knows everybody. I think there are doctors out there who would be willing to provide some service at prices that this young guy can afford.
Prices for these services can be crazy. Can you imagine 5,000 dollars for a colonoscopy. That is how much the guy was trying to charge the insurance company, “deftly” negotiated down to 2.000 by the insurance company. I still wound up paying 500 on top of that.
good luck with the search. that is the scariest thing with the US – have no insurance but have big medical care needs
There’s more and more of us like that.
As a walk-in, at any MDs office especially, you can negotiate your charges, especially if you are going to pay cash.
I think it may be more difficult here in NYC as opposed to smaller cities and towns, but I know someone who self insures in CT and he negotiates his fees.
Donatella, maybe you could email CGar and ask him for Legion’s email. I’m sure he’d give it to you under the circumstances.
no can do my man. have to check in on the kid at lunch – ie it’s still his 1st week there.
There’s a gastroenterologist a friend of mine went to who charges minimally if you talk to him about it:
Dr. H. Tressler – 1-888-418-0274
Excellent! This is great. Thanks Arkady!!
That is why everyone who has a house and any other assets needs to put them in a revocable trust. In case you require long term medicaid care, they will go after your assets with a 5 year look-back.
who would be the administrators for such trusts?
You get a lawyer to draw them up and you select the Executor
Since I haven’t been around this might already have been posted but I saw a thing in the paper that a t.v. show about first-time house buyers is looking for people in Brooklyn. You can probably Google it.
also might want to look into HealthyNY or something like that —–health insurance for single adults from NY state program….I think would be in HMO– rates are probably much more affordable if qualify.
sell me your house for cheap. I’ll give you an RC rent. some under the table cash payments. bam bam, you’re all set for that HMO setup
I will check that out!! Thanks.
“In case you require long term medicaid care, they will go ater your assets with a 5 year look-back. ” — that is the attitude that is bankrupting medicaid….sense of entitlement…..saying will ‘go after your assets’….which in reality is asking you pay for what you receive instead of us taxpayers paying for it.
Pete, if you want to give your properties to the gov’t, be my guest.
crap, the damn clicking on the “in reply to….” doesnt work anymore.
m4l, it works for me.
Are you implying that the user experience on this site can be inconstant?
this site is more moody and unpredictable than my worst crazy girlfriends. and the strict moderator algorithm is like a nagging feature. lastly, I can’t talk back to the site. arhhhhhhhhhhh so annoying
That happened to me yesterday. Had to close the page and reopen it.
some thing happened to me. Had to reopen. grr.
i think randi is funny.
well, I appreciate most “attempts” at levity, but never really saw what was funny about him.
I can’t wait to hear the howls of protest but randi is not a troll. He posts both drek and good stuff- just like the rest of us and sometimes he’s a jerk- just like the rest of us.
not worth howling about bxgrl. I am glad you accept him. Even jackasses need love.
And I don’t get your problem with him. A little over the top, all things considered.
I really don’t have a problem with him. I don’t have a problem with anybody. Jus sayin’ He needs rehabilitation. But I leave that to you. Good luck!!!!
You’ll have to get me the name of the health care places you got information on today because his meds will be expensive.
ok, will do. Ok, now I am outta here!! Have a good day!
Dona, is the guy collecting a regular paycheck now? If he is not, most hospitals (such as NYU) will help you fill out paperwork for temporary medicaid and he’ll be able to have all the testing and treatment done (if necessary). I know there are plenty of other options so if Legion can’t suggest anything, email me (cgar know my email addy) and I’ll ask my mom since she knows all of that kinds of stuff.
Donatella, Lutheran Hosp. was very kind to my friend.
“Even jackasses need love”
D’oh, donatella!!!! Why the eff do you think bxgrl e-married me after all???
Why the eff do you think bxgrl e-married me after all???
probably the same reason everyone gets married these days, for the tax benefits. :-/ i really wish the whole institution of marriage was abolished. it’s a total tax sham and while it does create jobs for some (like people who make wedding dresses and cakes and stuff), it ruins many a lives.
Sorry you feel that way about marriage, *rob*. And, to think, I had big plans to propose marriage to you. Ah, well.
marrying your little brother is not right in so many ways
Uh, yeah, m4l, was it really necessary for me to add a [sarcasm alert] to that post???
like a long unfed shark, I’m attacking anything/everything here. sarcasm or not, I’m pouncing. else it would be even more zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
i am SO not marriage material
“i am SO not marriage material”
Really??? I’d guess that, to a person, everyone here is shocked to learn that about you, *rob*.
ok, now youre just being a meanie genie
yo, I see you pouncing on everything too as Rob’s statements are pretty rhetorical
“sometimes he’s a jerk- just like the rest of us. ” –
speak for yourself.
I was thinking specifically of you, pete, since you tear down lost dog posters
So what would you propose re: trusts and medicaid? The situation with long-term care and medicaid is the most clear example of how our welfare state destroys the virtue of thrift:
a) case “A”: a person sacrifices throughout his or her life to save for their old age. According to Pete, this person shouldn’t try to shelter their assets. Nah, he should just pay for everything himself.
Case “B”: a person who doesn’t save at all for their old age. No problem! Enroll in medicaid and the government will foot the bill for your nursing home.
Case “C”: People who don’t save for old age are euthanized and used as fertilizer.
randi keeps it real.
this is it…not healthyny..
RMLC lunch today, benson????
so you guys are proposing universal gov’t health care for all…. fine by me….run it by the Tea bagger Party friends of yours.
Can’t make it today. However, I can probably make it next week. Does Lech still come to the RMLC?
Case “D” If you need an operation and don’t have the money for it here, book yourself in a nice hotel in bangkok and get it over there for 1/10th the price
Lech will be there. We’re doing Chinese today (nh).
yo, save grand sichuen for next week man. I can do RMLC next week
So in other words: you don’t have a proposal.
i would respect benson and dibs more if they just come out and say poor people would be better off dead.
Not all of them, dh. Where would I get hustlers then????
i have a proposal. kill old/poor people
A little too close for comfort, dh??????
haha – if you think i’m a hipster then you don’t know what a hipster is
and who would ring you up at duane reade?
self check out lines
DH: when you have a serious comment, let me know.
The shrillness from the left is not lost on me and many folks. Things not working out as planned? Hope and change ring hollow? Don’t take it out on us.
serious comment? screw you you condescending prick
healthcare = life. if you want to deny it to people – they will die.
let me know when anyone here cares what you have to say
I WISH Dueane read had self checkout lines.
I don’t by the destroys thrift. If you don’t save for old age….will be lousy old-age for all the years b4 end up in some nursing home. Just because
you may have to spend some of that $ to pay for your last couple years and diminish the transfer of wealth to next generation (at the expense and subsidy of taxpayers).
now THAT’s hateful rhetoric
off to blue bottle – later y’all
dont go there man. the long lines will just make you more ticked off. just supplement via the shorter lines at McD’s
As I said: shrill.
Benson, there you are!! Before I go, I wnted to tell you that my Texas friend is concerned about sending his kids to Catholic school in Houston. I’m telling you my friend, it is a different culture down there! It’s out of control!!
if the teacher nuns there are “packing”, I would not be swinging back at them with my fist when they smacked me with the ruler for talking in class
If the government asked that a person spend part of their assets, I would agree with what you say. But that is not what happens. Minus a trust, the government will make you pay until ALL of your assets are drained, for the SAME BENEFIT that a person with no assets has. That is simply wrong, and why trusts are so prevalent.
Things I have to do today:
1. Mail boat propeller to nauset Marine for refurbishment
2. have lunch with Republicans at the RMLC. Discuss current state of affairs and wring hands.
3. Call my attorney to make estate changes so gov’t can’t have any more assets that I’ve worked hard for
4. Stop at Ideal Cheese for some Robbiola and perhaps some foie gras as well
5. Decide which restaurant to eat at tonight.
6. Ogle and maybe fondle the Mexican help at said restaurant.
7. car service back home.
Just another day in the life of a republican. Although the fondling would be my “Democratic” side.
what is problem with the catholic school there…. they infused it with a little evangelisism?
8. Make one or two trades here at the Mutant Asset Hedge Fund to justify coming in
I enjoy seeing her pop in and out for some comedy relief. otherwise I’d be stuck here with bxgrl & MM on my case all day.
Playing the world’s tiniest violin~*~~*~~*
lot of your assets are protected if have spouse alive (which is one reason why lot of gays pressuring for Federal recognition of marriage).
Just saying annoys me the way I hear many people say gov’t takes or seizes your assets……It would be the nursing home that requires payment and eventually if your income and assets are sufficient – which could take many years if ever last that long (not big chance) .
And I know what these people are worried about (including plenty of my friends) — they are counting the days for the inheritance.
I see it as inheritance at taxpayer expense.
Yes because upon your death, everything that you worked for your whole life should be distributed the the masses.
Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.
I have had some succes in referring patients over to the J. Addabbo health centers.
They are community based, non-for-profit.
They accept most insurances or will work with an individual to obtain appropriate medical coverage depending on circumstances.
They even have sliding scale payment plans for those without coverage.
My first bit of advice would be to ask your friend if they have sought out one of the low cost sliding scale plans offered by the state like Family Health Plus.
If they do not qualify, they should do as arkady and dibs have suggested and negotiate with the doctor’s office.
Believe me, most doctors will take drastic reductions in their usual fee schedule if paid out of pocket.
There is no easy way around diagnostic procedures like a colonoscopy since there are associated fees with the center (O.R. Time) where it is performed. Anesthesia fees also, those are hard to negotiate since one doesn’t usually meet the anesthesiologist until one is at the center.
Best bet is to try for one of those sliding scale, state administered plans.
And don’t count out Medicaid, if they can prove financial hardship, the state does grant Medicaid coverage.
This is so great!!!! Thanks, Legion. I am going to do the research on this later. Kens, thanks too. Gotta run out of here now for real.
I have a lot of info to get HIM started. He is always making some kind of money (just finished up substituting for Brooklyn Tech and Murray Bertram High School) but unfortunately, unless you are a full time teacher, no benefits.
Later! Que tenga un buen dia, perdidos!!!!
that’s the website^^^^^^^^^
and btw, if enter a nursing home as medicaid recipient….chances you will be in those shi**y nursing homes you read about … not the nicer ones.
I won’t go Pete. I want to die in my own home.
I pray Asian kids dont become americanized to point where they would send their parents to those nursing homes instead of caring for them
“I want to die in my own home”
Me too. As did my mother, my maternal grandmother, and my great aunt – and they all did. I spent years marshaling and managing assets and managed to keep my great aunt living, with round the clock aids (required) until she died peacefully in her sleeip at 98-1/2 (and she worked 6 days/week until she was 90+). Same thing my mother did for my grandmother. Unfortunately, my mother went in 3 months after being diagnosed, so going through her money was not an issue in that case.
And, personally, my sibs and I encouraged all of my close relatives to spend every cent they had on themselves, and leave us nothing. Inheritance was not something we cared about. Their care, comfort and happiness was infinitely more important.
That’s admirable of you cgar,
not many would go to those lengths.
“you worked for your whole life should be distributed the the masses.” -
don’t be silly…I would never advocate giving it to the churches.
I would hire an Asian kid to take care of me in my old age.
“I would hire an Asian kid to take care of me in my old age”
You already do, dave.
Sponge baths and the like.
I used to visit nursing homes when I worked for another doctor in Westchester.
Some of these places were quite nice up there!
There were arts and crafts,
entertainers doing sing alongs,
nice fish tanks and many times there would be pet therapy where
they would bring in pets for the older folks to play with.
That was nice.
…other places were really bad, basically storage units for humans.
I call bullshit on what you just said re: medicaid and quality of nursing home. As you said at the beginning of this discussion, the whole reason people put their house and other assets into trusts is so that their nursing home is paid by medicaid. I know people who are in quite nice nursing homes, paid for by medicaid. I will grant you that it’s better to go into a nursing home out of NYC. Most of NYC’s nursing homes are hellholes.
My dad was in rehab at the nursing home at North Shore Hospital. They have many permanent residents. It’s a wonderful place.
Yes, legion is right. just because facilities are shitty and obnoxious and annoying here, they are not like that outside NYC, especially smaller cities and towns. Many ARE quite nice….the one in provincetown for example.
Jinx, benson…about nursing homes being nicer outside hellhole NYC.
most people don’t end up in nursing home…but there are nicer ones….
I visited Masonic home in utica when friend was rec. director there….reminded me of holiday inn ( I know that is low-rent in benson’s book).
Problem is if you have dementia – not gonna be able to do hiring or paying your own bills — and since happens gradually never gonna trust hire someone to do it for you until too late.
“Problem is if you have dementia – not gonna be able to do hiring or paying your own bills — and since happens gradually never gonna trust hire someone to do it for you until too late.”
Which is why you don’t wait and do it now, leaving explicit instructions as to your care.
This past weekend I went to visit someone in a nursing home in Jackson, New Jersey. This person is on medicaid, and not due to a trust. She is a woman whose husband died when she was 47, and had 5 kids to take care of. She has always struggled.
Anyways, the nursing home was really quite pleasant.
Health care power of attorney…maybe not given to your spouse but someone who is a good friend and whom you trust!!!!!
You’re wrong about nursing homes being nicer outside of NYC. We went to visit a friend’s father upstate- hellhole describes ti nicely. And my 102 year old uncle who died a few months ago was in a nursing home on the upper east side that was wonderful.
If you feel that way, fine by me. As for me and my family: I wouldn’t get caught dead in a NYC nursing home, if I can help it.
What in heaven’s name are you talking about? Because I can point to first hand experience that belies your generalizations? Are you calling me a liar? Figures. Tolerate no opinion or experience but your own. How small-minded you are.
“I wouldn’t get caught dead in a NYC nursing home”
benson, if dead they kick you out of nursing home immediately..so little chance of getting caught dead there.
florida is supposed to have mostly crummy nursing homes too
I wonder what the nursing homes are like in Texas?
It might be better than staying home and eating cat food.
No need to escalate the nursing home discussion. he never called you a liar. it’s just his preference based on what he’s seen
dave- his whole post was basically saying he didn’t believe me.
Ok- looking to the left, anyone else have the regular blog stream showing? Mine is gone.
I image like every other aspect of life, there are good and bad nursing homes everywhere.
NYC ones certainly have much higher real estate costs to overcome, along with higher personnel costs. On the other hand, they have a larger labor pool to pull from.
I would guess that there are some great ones in the city, but they are super expensive.
Personally, I have not been to many nursing homes but I think they have all been hellish to some degree. On the other hand, most of my family is not well off, so they would not tend to end up in the nicer ones.
I actually had a conversation about nursing homes in rural areas this last weekend. My friend in Georgia is a volunteer firefighter/EMT, and he was complaining about how incompetent and unsafe one of the two nursing homes in the county is.
I am not calling you a liar. It’s a matter of opinion. As I said: if you think that NYC’s nursing homes are good, it’s fine by me. I am only responsible for my own family and my opinion is that NYC’s nursing homes are generally hellholes. It’s simply my opinion.
I gave one as an example- I didn’t generalize it into saying all NYC nursing homes are good.
Well, from his experience he hasn’t seen a good one. He’s entitled to his own opinion on what he prefers.
As am I. I only posted my own experiences in counter to the generalizations made about nursing homes in NYC and upstate.
benson, RMLC today??? Chinese food
What about NYC insane asylums????
Those are fun. Are you posting from there now?
“What about NYC insane asylums???? ”
Yeah, the Brownstoner OT.
I need a drink, not Chinese food.
I had aunt(childless) who died in nursing home after being there for many years. she was crazy. quite a few years after her death my brother saw there were abandoned funds in her and my uncles name….he eventually settled estate and I got about $5k. (out of total of maybe $100k)
everyone in her will (which was made out in early 60′s was dead – executors, her lawyers, heirs, etc, etc, etc).
My uncle (not the 102 year old one), who was nearly comatose for over 40 years, and lived in a state institution upstate somewhere. Talk about hellholes- the mentally ill and the criminally insane, all in one facility. But they had nice picnic grounds so families could visit. Ugh.
Looks like the space shuttle is cleared for its last launch in 10 minutes.
bxgrl, I’m gonna send Nurse ratchet down from upstairs to restrain you again.
I can’t wait
which one bxgrl? those institutions were big employer upstate years ago.
beautiful grounds. most are closed now
I don’t know the name- we were little kids and my father would go up to visit twice a year. I just remember it being a horrible, scary place- huge. But we would always wait at the picnic tables for him to come back. And the long car ride.
I’m glad I got to see the Space Shuttle launch in 2009.
It was the last time I was able to travel with my mom before she passed away. I was in Florida visiting and they announced the launch after several failed attempts. I immediately planned the road trip since I figured I might never get the chance again.
It was a night launch just after Midnight and truly awe inspiring.
i cant wait for the day im in a nursing home. im gonna be the biggest brat theyve ever met. you nurses better watch out!!! did anyone watch big brother last night? rachel got head of household!!!
rob- don’t think we can do tonight. We had stuff planned and the scheduling got knocked way back. We’ll try for another day.
another day then
still going to the beach today??
nah, im going to shilliamsburg
the last convo i had with my grandfather before he died was me going to visit him (he was living in jersey) and had a hospice nurse (according to him she was hot and very nice but im a bit chary about that, im sure anyone who wipes your butt probably seems nice) i brought cookies over and was like do you want a cookie? and he was like i dont i dont want your damn cookies lol.
Passed through a border crossing yesterday called Wadi Jizzi (nh!).
“Passed through a border crossing yesterday called Wadi Jizzi (nh!). ”
Isn’t that located just outside of Awabout Coit-Us
i want a weavealicious sassy black woman who curses at me to take care of me in my old age. with my luck ill probably wind up with some beardo :-/
ha that would be funny,
a beardo wheeling you to the doctor’s appointments while you are forced to listen to his inane cell phone conversations.
The beardo oblivious to the fact that you understand every word of his conversation.
I think in the minds of my OT fans, I will die like the Citizen Kane: alone and grumpy, muttering something about meatballs or Texas.
I went to a Japanese hibachi style restaurant with mrslegion and the little ones yesterday.
When the chef did the “volcano” where he chops the onions and builds a small volcano then fills it with oil and lights it on fire,
littlegirllegion started crying from fright.
The chef was experienced though and had a small plastic figure, of a cherub peeing, on hand filled with water to put out the flames.
She started laughing at that.
The chef was also adept at squirting the adult diners in the face with sake in a squeeze bottle.
she died peacefully in her sleeip at 98-1/2
ooof. some people like stick around waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay tooooo long. at that age 98!!!! youre nothing but a burden to other people. it’s selfish to stick around that long.
*rob*, I’m sorry you feel that way, but hardly surprised.
My great aunt was a wonderful, a bit eccentric, woman, who gave of herself generously (to a fault) her entire life. She went out of her way to hire people for a company she built starting in the depression. She had no children, and outlived her 6 siblings, 3 nephews, and most friends and everyone else in her life. She was NOT a burden in the least. And those of us who survived her couldn’t do enough for her.
your aunt sounds like the exception then. most old people are just flat out burdens.
the best people in life die young anyway
is that why you’re predicting the age 40 demise for you?
if one doesnt have children, living past 40 is absurd and a drain on the planet.
The oldest person on the planet just called, age 122.
They said :
bite me! (with dentures)
122? gtfoh. that’s nothing but a sack of bones and skin pooping itself. what a selfish person. i also believe that when someone dies a new life comes about. prologing that crap is just keeping a new life from entering. selfish
Interesting movie recommendation:
Being John Malkovich
The plot revolves around a secret portal through which one can enter the consciousness of another person.
A group of old people plan to go through the portal and begin new lives inside the bodies of newborn children.
Funny in an absurd way.
didnt they rip off the plot oc Coocoon? and LOL that Coocoon had a sequel.
Legion, glad to see you’re catching up with movies that came out before DH was born.
Malkovich? Malkovich. Malkovich!
Planet of the Apes will be showing at the Film Forum this weekend!
do you recall a small art movie theatre in the East Village that showed old films and foreign flicks?
I think it was on 3rd Ave and 6th or something.
They even had a small cafe in the lobby.
I wonder if it still exists.
I once say the Wages of Fear there,
that was a cool movie:
a group of men hauling a shipment of nitroglycerine
over rugged mountainous roads in South America.
I think it is still there. It started life as a Jewish vaudeville house.
That’s good to know,
I’ll have to look it up in Time Out NY mag.
Nothing like seeing old movies on the big screen.
Speaking of that,
The Museum of The Moving Image has finished its renovations and now has several large screens. The place looks great.
They have weekly screenings of all sorts of movies.
The movie that day was Serpico.
Have always wanted to check out the museum of the moving image… fear the urchins mean that’s several years away, if they didn’t renovate themselves out of existence like the folk art museum…
It’s worth the trip to LIC/Astoria.
The kids love the miniature “King Tut” theatre which looks like one of those old movie houses from the 30′s. They play stuff like Pixar animation and Buck Rogers.
Kids and parents get to make their own computer mini-animations and e-mail the results to themselves right from the museum.
They have a large movie toy collection and their galleries change frequently.
This last visit, my favorite part was the actual minature house models they used to film The Silence of the Lambs.
They had schematics, blue prints and the miniature models of the infamous basement.
the new version?
no, in cocoon, they were old aliens.
I have videotapes older than DH!
DH is pushing 30. you all are OLD
DH is around 30?
that’s about 1981.
Yeah, I think I have an old videotape of Breakin II (Electric Bugaloo) in the attic somewhere. That’s about that old.
DH should respect his elders!
Back from an enjoyable RMLC lunch with Jackal.
rob, was watching a movie on BET (?) last night…lots of commercials for your friend Mo’Nique’s show
Oh, and Lechacal says hello to everyone. Well, not everyone.
Did lechacal say he missed us here on the OT?
You know how to get him back? Tell him CMU has been posting out of control in the OT.
That should do it. lol
He’s not likely to be back unless “the beach” gets blown up over there>>>>>
I wish Lech would come back so that I can get a break from the heavy fire!!
we’ll keep the “partying” under control here.
There are enough RMLC members to fend off a batallion of MSNBC watchers. ;o)
“Heavy” fire? You used to have a thicker skin. Also, did you come back the other day and do a victory dance for the Italian hardware trifecta? You had a crowing halftime report. Any word on whether 1 & 2 are actually better than Leopoldis, or just a function of reader location?
Dibs — does jackal still wax poetic about his commute?
Poor benson. Can’t take the heat!
Jesus Christo…Senate has formed a committee whose goal it seems to be is to micromanage companies offshore earnings.
More bull sh i t
more committees, more jobs
More government jobs is part of the problem, not the solution.
beggars can’t be choosers – ie govt jobs better than nothing.
just as I see you taking a gunless talent when the pickings are dried up
speaking of talent, there’s some fine young talent at my kid’s school. think they’re all summer interns or something though
interesting david brooks column in today’s paper you might find interesting dibs, as per yesterday’s discussion on people making choices – often not best economic, health interest.
Pete, I have no doubt that the vast majority of Americans make bad choices.
The offshore earnings is an interesting thing. I wonder how much of those earnings ever make it back to the US. Seems to me that a US company ought to be paying US taxes. UnAmerican not to, really.
so all the huge foreign entities in this country dont have to pay US taxes or do they need to pay double taxes (ie to US and to their home country)?
I think elderly people are treated like crap in this country. Everything, including medical attention is so complicated and absurd. And you really really need to have all your documents in place early on. Must have Health Proxy, Living Will and Will in place. Must have some one else that can pay your bills for you. If you’re a kid taking care of a parent, do NOT wait to sort all this out with them. Understand their wishes now. Do it sooner than later. SUPER IMPORTANT. Do not wait for a crisis.
And power of attorney. But you have to be careful, too. Big business ripping off seniors.
Correct, I forgot that one, but yes, very important.
Cobble they don’t bring the earnings back hardly at all because they would be double taxed. Despite what you may think and continue to use GE as an example, US corporate taxes are the highest in the world.
I doubt it, between subsidies and tax breaks, I can’t see how.
Actually, slopey that did come up. he enjoys his commute immensely.
So what does he fight about these days , and with whom? Seems he was never happy without resistance and a windmill to tilt at. or is he now just blissfully happy?
Heidi just had a 3 gallon jug of cheese balls delivered with the WB Mason order.
so what’s wrong? wrong brand???
Go ahead and ridicule me for unhealthy eating habits
No such thing as wrong brand with cheese balls, m4l, as long as they aren’t the “crunchy” ones
you posted “AARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH” and even this immigrant understands that to me you’re whining/complaining. if you liked it, you should’ve posted “YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”
“No such thing as wrong brand with cheese balls, ” — raunch hour.
seriously interesting column, about studies on how these bad choices could be made.
things are blissfully happy over on frownstoner.com
I can even post pics like this:
trust me, Cobble, they are the highest
Teach me how to have a thick skin – party girl.
At least I had friends, benson.
Actually, the cheese balls contain 0 cholesterol.
Oooh baby, them’s fightin words!!!!
yo, hurry up and pass me some of that cheese ball and other snacks
I think more seniors get ripped off by relatives than by big business.
I didn’t mean “big business” in that sense. There is a big (or should I say brisk) business business in ripping off seniors in the sense that lots of unscrupulous people sell their skills and expertise in matters such as estate planning, and ultimately gain enough trust to get themselves designated with power of attorney, then abuse it. Relatives, too. It’s a major problem.
yeah, big business doesn’t discriminate …they rib you off and bleed your dry at all ages.
but then…so do relatives.
it hurts more to be ripped off by relatives
Good gosh, that stung, party girl.
And second of all, I wasn’t talking about myself yesterday, I was talking about someone else. Learn to read, jackass.
See, bxgrl, I’m not the only one who calls someone a jackass!!!!!!
‘power of attorney’ – that is the problem — the power those lawyers have.
You can give power of attorney to a family member, whether or not that person is an attorney. It’s to execute decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. And yes, lawyers and family members can be equally unscrupulous in abusing that power.
DIBS and Legion;
Have you noticed a certain “bad temper” by our friends on the left? What’s come over them? Any guesses? He-he-he.
It must really hurt the Democrats being ripped off by their president.
benson, I suspect that the fire hydrants on their blocks aren’t getting opened up to cool them off.
why do they call it the ‘left’? because that is all we working people get…..only what is left after the capitalists take all they want?
Actually Pete, you get a salary BEFORE the profits flow to the owners.
things aint going well and praying for econ to be worst by time of election so better odds of winning election. what is wrong with that mindset????
current partisan bullllllshit is sickening
Spare me the lectures. Look through the past few OT’s and see what’s happened. Any time DIBS, Legion or I propose something that we feel is in the best interests in our country, someone will accuse us of wishing the worst on the poor or sick.
you should know my track record here. I can’t be hall monitored. Only Mr B can ban my assssssss to shut me up.
my sickening remarks is for both parties. if it fits, wear it
In all seriousness, benson, I know you and dibs well enough to know you do not actually wish harm to people and that you genuinely view your proposals as the right way to go (NPI). I have very different views about these matters, as you know, and I don’t want to take the time to craft statements today to engage in serious disussion. I do think it can get quite freewheeling on the OT, and this space is mroe conducive to pithy remarks and snark than sustained serious debate. We’ve all been hotheaded here on political topics, we’ve all been snarky, and we’ve all taken offense at others when they do this, and I think there is a general tendency on lots of our parts to understate the aggression in our own statements and overstate the aggression in opposition. I’m all in favor of this being a freewheeling forum, but I think we would all do well to let a bit more roll off our backs. (I’m replying to you not to single you out but because you raised the issue. Just my reaction to the topic.)
it’s not hard to foresee outcome of either party fuckkkkkkkkking up big will mean tons of damage to the population. so why do folks find joy in praying and seeing either party mess it up big???
it’s very freaking UNamerican to pray for harm and disaster to fall upon fellow citizens
No one prays for harm & disaster to fall on fellow citizens. First of all, it makes no economic sense because we’ll wind up paying for it.
then why the extreme assymetric response on outcomes of current administration – ie no praise, super silence with something works out but cheers big time when something doesn’t work out???? that’s super akin to sports fans cheering for the other team to fail.
One word. Selfishness.
It needs to be a team effort. But the right is of the “every man for himself” credo.
WHOAH….m4l & Cobble. How often have we heard the outright hatred for Bush coming from you people.
well, shame on those too. this aint a dumb and dumber contest where being less dumb (or shameful) should make the winner be boastful or joyous.
The Bush hate was far higher than any “hate” of Obama. Don’t deny it
that’s exactly the issue with the partisan crap today. too much tit for tat bs among the damn parties where they seem to forget the population and it’s the population that is hurt by this bs
I’m just sayin It started a long time ago. There was Nixon hate, Carter hate, reagan hate, Clinton hate…all except Ford. you can’t hate an oaf.
this great country at risk of losing well deserved top dog status and lots of the failings today seem to be self inflicted so this is the time for teamwork and not that praying for other side to fail. at this rate, we’ll do more tanking into 2nd, 3rd,… place than other countries catching & surpassing us on their own accomplishments
Again, I say: spare me the lecture. Look through this OT. I didn’t comment at all on President Obama and the jobs report. When I make a point about the way Medicaid is structured (which is not a current topic of debate in the Congress) I was met with a gratuitous accusation of wishing that poor people would just die
if you didnt’ feel it fits, then it wasn’t directed at you then. ie you can just ignore it.
Unless it came from me. Then it WAS directed at you, benson! : P
There has been some hate for all presidents, but it seems to have greatly increased for Clinton, went to a new level for Bush, and has now been topped for Obama.
It seems like the three recent presidents have had more attacks against them personally and not just their positions and policies.
At the same time, the amount of compromise between parties has been falling.
BHS, you must be too young to remember the Nixon hate.
Nixon was certainly before my time, but how much of it was against him as a person before Watergate?
I do remember Regan very well. Plenty of people were very much against his policies, but other than jokes about his age there did not seem to be a lot of mean spirited personal attacks on him.
Maybe we should elect M4L. I hear he works for brownies. ; )
DIBS, Nixon fairly deserved some of that hate.
Yes, cobble, i’m sure each of the republicans did but none of the democrats did.
look, I bought Obama’s campaign slogans and am disappointed with him so far. while he is in office, I wish him the best. I dont like obamacare but given it’s been enacted, I pray/hope for the hyped outcome. Obama or obamacare failing would bring me no joy. A better replacement would bring me joy. but until the better replacement is in office, I hope for the best with Obama
randi, that was fun
do you ever go to http://www.diehipster.com
you mean DH’s blog?
BHS and all;
Can someone point out where personal attacks have been hurled towards President Obama on the OT?
I was not talking about the OT, but society in general.
I was not on Brownstoner during the Bush years, but I would guess that there were probably more personal attacks against him here than against Obama here.
My guess is that a good part of the personal attacks against Obama nationwide are racially driven.
With Bush, most of the personal attacks nationwide seemed to be because of his home state and perceived intelligence level.
Right benson…no one is burning images of Obama. that was de rigeur for Bush…as well as Nixon and reagan.
I can’t say I agree with burning images of any POTUS in effigy, but I can say I understood the anger.
Your statement was disingenuous, imo. You know full well where the personal attacks have been coming from. If you don’t want to get involved, fine by me, but I’m not going to accept the “everyone does it” line.
I am happy to have you make the case to the contrary, but they are not striking me as being as personal as you are taking them to be. I might have missed something in particular that’s bothered you as I am not always here and I don’t venture back past the current 100 posts. I may be wrong, and you are entitled toyour opinions and your reactions, but I think disingenuopus is the wrong word, here.
Anyway, I don’t want to head into the weekend on a sour note. I hope you and the other PLUSAs will find something fun to talk about before day is up and I wish you an enjoyable weekend.
And I would edit disingenuopus, but the edit function never works for me.
Slopey, I like Benson. DIBS too. if a little finger wagging on the OT breaks the relationship then it wasn’t much of a relationship anyways. I wouldn’t be too concerned when the PLUSAs going at it like this once in a while. If one of us ever throws a drink at another PLUSA’s face (vs offering to buy drinks) yeah then that’s solid proof it went too far.
Slopey is one of the most sincere, direct and honest people on the OT.
There will be no drink throwing. Whoever wastes alcohol like that will be permanently banned.
someone should buy me a drink for getting 300 there. at minimum, some brownies
I second that!
For the record, I have been disappointed with every president since George H W Bush.
I think Clinton’s presidency ended up being good, but that was because he was forced to compromise with the fiscally conservative Republicans (who were willing to compromise).
Historically, I think the “good” presidents of the 20th century were Roosevelt, Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower. Kennedy was not in office long enough to make a good judgement. Regan did a lot of good, but also had a lot of negatives as well.
None were perfect, but I think all left the country better off than it would have been otherwise.
Me too, Scott. I thought HW did a decent job; he was done in by the recession but was a good president. Clinton achieved a lot and did a lot and I think he was helped by the Republican congress. I voted for W. But I was bitterly bitterly disappointed. I actually walked out of that Michael Moore movie Farheinheit 911 or whatever the name of it was, because I have respect for the office of the Presidency but
I was disturbed by a lot of things with him — particularly the direction of foreign policy but also other criticisms from the perspective of fiscal responsiblity – i.e. Medicare Part D. My problem with Obama is that he doesn’t seem to stand very strongly for anything and I am disappointed with a few things but really I really believe that he drank the Petreaus Kool-aid with the counterinsurgency in Afghanistan and lo and behold, here we are in more damn wars than I ever thought possible. So much for the peacenik. We do NOT need this counterinsurgency thing and Obama bought this goofy plan hook, line and sinker. I want him to succeed though; the economy is really tough and all the chickens have come to roost on his watch.
I came very close to voting for W the first time around, but his desire to put tax cuts in front of deficit reduction made me change my mind.
Once he took office, I was very disappointed in his foreign and fiscal policies. Out of control spending with additional tax cuts is not a good fiscal policy.
I did not have high hopes for Obama, and he has failed to meet my low expectations.
Can we talk about sex now????
I do like it RUFF, jessi.
Anyone here have any good weekend plans?
I have to wake up way the eff too early tomorrow to volunteer for a race in Central Park.
I have to be at West 90th street at 6:30 in the morning.
I must be insane.
so waking up at 5am?
yo, I used to have to wake up at like 4am or something like that when it was my turn to help open up the freaking McD’s. that was brutal as it was freaking minimum wage
Yep, I’ll be up around 5 am on a Saturday.
To make me even more insane, I am doing this so I can qualify for the Marathon next year.
RUFF is good, as long as I am on the giving end.
so no stray-on’s???!!!
Sex. Sex is a many splendored thing. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways! : P
And RUFF from RUFF trade is even better.
How’s this for farking weird – I’m going on an overnight business trip and the woman I’m travelling with who is my superior suggested we get double beds and bunk together.
Creepy. Unless you’re super friendly, but even then, it’s a little weird.
We’re friendly, but only in a very professional way. It’s been suggested that maybe it’s because she’s religious and part of her practice is to be frugal….dunno.
I’ve never been asked to share a room on a business trip, and I have taken many.
is the firm expecting employees to be super tight with the travel and meal costs???
No, this isn’t coming from the firm – I asked a partner about it. She doesnt get any profits from the deal.
Mmmm… firm… super tight…
I’ve heard of selective recall now I can check off selective reading
When did you see my buns??
Pass the walnuts, please.
I’m having Denton come over and take pics of the house to do a website for when I will list it for sale.
Oshima tonight for dinner. Not sure about tomorrow or Sunday but one thing is certain, there will be alcohol.
“It’s been suggested that maybe it’s because she’s religious and part of her practice is to be frugal”
Ha. Not Jewish, but closer with the second suggestion.
Chinese business travelers are big asss spenders
Very religous and Asian, but not Indian sub or Flip….
just to be safe, I wouldn’t suggest that you prance around the hotel room with just the bath towel
No need – M4L – I told her I’m gettng my own room.
Korean is correct.
Does anyone know if that’s a thing – to be cheap when it isn’t even your money?
not if they grew up here
But M4L, that is in fact a thing though? Being cheap just for the sake of not wasting money – no matter if it’s ending up in your pocket?
yeah, Asians are like that. I aint super frugal on business trips but I tend to take it easy on the company. this is how we’re brought up and it gets ingrain in us and it’s a default thinking we have to proactively shut down in order to splurge
Cool, thanks, M4L, that’s pretty interesting. I mean, but still, you would think that even if your own default was to go easy on the company, you would sort of pause before suggesting the idea of bunking with someone who you know doesnt have the same upbringing….
My father was like that. In fact, most of my Yankee family was like that. My super wealthy gr. father used to pack me turkey sandwiches for long train rides and make me share a glass of milk with my sibling in a restaurant to save a buck. I have hours of stories like that.
Or Singaporean Episcopal
Man, if I ever had to share a room with a colleague, especially my boss, on a trip to Asia, I’d book another hotel for my own use.
DIBS, or your boss would get another room as he couldn’t sleep with you getting busy with the rent boys
I have a 15k race to run in utica on sunday. then family get-together.
Koreans, mostly converted to christianity, tend to be very religious. i don’t know about the frugal thing.
Just don’t let her get drunk. Koreans have a very bad temper when they are drunk
Yeah, we have a closing dinner with a lot of wine. I wonder if she even drinks…
many folks view drinking wine is fine – ie it’s NOT beer, hard liquor,…
so I think she’ll drink. dont let her sit forever as it’s easy to be pretty drunk on wine and not know it via sitting down. I’ve had many near face-plants getting up from sofa after countless glasses of wine – ie the jello knees effect
BIG storm headed here…in manhattan very soon
Japanese are anything but frugal on business trips.
Chinese and Indians are worst when they traveling on international business. part of reason is I suspect they’re still learning restraint on concept of company expense account.
i had one overnight trip to albany as a state gov’t employee. I had to share room with my boss at a friend of his apt. There goes your freespending state gov’t ideas .
Actually I’m quite frugal on a business trip. i don’t charge every meal to the company just because i’m out of town.
I don’t need a big hotel breakfast every morning so i’ll buy a pastry or something and have the free coffee in the room. Lunch is usually whatever I catch
even in your old gig?? is it because you have to spend too much time checking out potential talent in the area vs splurging on the company acct?
I was gonna say the same thing M4L – even when you worked for the big bank, you still were frugal?
japanese think is a bargain when traveling to new york tho, right?
especially when they hit the luxury goods stores
japanese and Europeans. Both currencies are strong.
You can eat reasonably well and cheaply in Japan though, exchange rates aside
I’m chary of any countries where they try to bring live chickens and ducks on the plane
Haha, better than sacks of dried fish!
If I am with other people on business trips, I try to eat and drink well.
By myself I tend to go frugal because I don’t like going to restaurants or bars alone.
What about eating dinner alone at the bar? That usually doesnt feel weird. Especially when armed with a mobile device.
I don’t like that either. I am most likely to grab a fast food type sandwich and gulp it outside while on a mobile device.
It probably comes from never having really lived alone in my life.
I went straight from a roommate in college to living with Wendy as soon as I graduated.
Alone-time is crucial to a well-adjusted jessibaby.
at the bar is fine. at the table is weird. but hot girls often tell me they prefer to dine solo at the table cause less guys constantly interrupting them eating
Yes, even when I was at US Trust. I prided myself on good hotel deals in very nice hotels because I was such a regular customer from when I lived in Hong Kong.
And i also knew great places to eat cheaply.
Only the few times that the rent boy raided the minibar did i think that was ripping off the company.
some people (actually some women) may not feel safe alone sleeping in strange hotel. or maybe she just has hots for you.
I had to share hotel room with guy when our jury was sequestered….some religious jewish guy (and they sent us to staten island no less)…. another example of the wild spending by state gov’t.
You self-entitled bigwigs would have been appalled slumming it so.
My company is pretty generous when we travel, particularly for the evening meal.
During all the years I travelled, I never paid more than $200 a night in any hotel, including The Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
That would be harder to do nowadays
did you add the rentboy to the expense acct
(if you didn’t — just means you weren’t high enuf up on totem pole – so to speak).
I was always too scared to rack up any big bills on business trips. And hated using my corp. Amex card. I was always sure they’d turn the charge back to me. But since I was often on the client side of the equation I didn’t have to spend much.
I take that back, the Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong was something like $250.
that’s killer price. everytime I flew to HK for biz, it was always the shangri la (ie that’s what the admin books for us) and it was freaking $800 a night. that’s money spent stupidly
the biggest tap I submitted to the company was when I was in miami and fell in love with the stone crab claws. my 3 co-workers and I were powering them down (oblivious to how much them claws cost) as if it was a pile of chicken wings at hooters or something. think we each ate like close to 160 each worth of claws
“I had to share hotel room with guy when our jury was sequestered”
wow. that sucks. big time. did you at least get to pick him as your roomie? though, i suppose, after being locked in a jury room, the whole bunch was pretty close at that point.
The Copley Plaza in Boston is prolly the most expensive place I stayed on a b. trip.
The first company I worked for encouraged big expense reports, so I got spoiled early on.
My last 2 companies have been very frugal, and we rely on vendors for most nice dinners when traveling.
pick your own? yeah, sure…I (gay, goy, atheist) always wanted to share a room with some guy davening .
I never liked eating alone on b. trips, even with a book, magazine or bberry. I’d rather get a sandwich and eat it in my hotel room than sit in a restaurant or at the bar by myself.
likes fast food and marries wendy. i get the connection.
I enjoy eating alone, especially in a nice hotel restaurant.
BUT even worse was all the forced socializing on b. trips! I HATED that! After a long day working and having lunch with people to then have to sit through dinner! UGH!!
One of the hardest things about travelling to Japan is that there is no concept of personal time. Work till about 6, then it’s off to dinner for 2.5 hours, followed by drinking/karaoke. Stagger into your hotel room drunk at 12 midnight and collapse into your bed.
yeah, that’s fun when we are young and hanging out with buddies. not so when it’s for work
I really really don’t like that whole Japan routine. I can’t drink much, I suffer from jetlag big time and dinner is fine but the whole “fun” thing isn’t very much fun and I would rather go back to the hotel and do what a NORMAL person does, go to sleep. But Japanese are so extreme and they force you to fight your inner wimp for no reason at all except to prove your toughness. ugh. Thinking of it makes me want to take an aspirin and take a nap.
Also, if i’m in asia for a long period of time, i have to have a few American food fixes. I know where to get a good pizza in HK or Tokyo, there’s a Burger King in bangkok right near the go-go bars and a subway in Tokyo
McDonalds, when written in Thai, looks really cool.
So does a pearl necklace.
lolz, i forgot some guys like to wear pearls.
That was a total ripp off, m4l. You should have shot your travel agent.
the admin is the CFO’s admin. she tends to book us into same hotel where the CFO or CEO stays at on those trips.
“pick your own? yeah, sure…I (gay, goy, atheist) always wanted to share a room with some guy davening . ”
sorry for giving you too much credit – i thought maybe you couldve thought the dude was cool despite being different from you.
well – maybe you’d think is cool to learn about being korean and lesbian with your travel roommate.
For many years I actually stayed at the Kowloon Hotel, behind the Peninsula, for $100 a night. it was close to the nightlife I was looking for.
yeah, I like that area too
jessi, I like a lot of dudes that are different from me…they usually have darker skin, jet black hair and may or may not have slanty eyes.
Dave, there’s this latino kid in my mailroom and he’s perfect for you. I always want to tell him to quit delivering packages and start working as a hustler.
My last few business trips have involved no social time and lots of forced socialization. As part of our cheapness policy we are expected to find vendors to pay for dinner.
In return, they want to as much time as possible with us for maximum schmoozing.
No, jesssi. Tell him to keep his job and be selective on the side for hustling jobs.
True, he’s gonna need health insurance if he starts working as a hustler.
oh, just saw you post now; mine is redundant
yeah, hustling doesnt cover benefits pkg
My formative years in biz were spent when I paid for most of my own travel. I got some kind of a little expense account, but barely anything and I paid for things out of my own pocket/commissions.. I arranged all my own travel and figured out how to do everything on the cheap (without being so cheap as to look loser-ish). So it is a habit. I hate to waste money and have been told that I am being too self-restrictive but I usually travel coach. I have seen people spend obscene amounts of money on travel and I have also found that that habit tends to paint a bullseye on you when things get rough.
When I was in Houston the guy in the office next to me was shown the door for stretching expense report polices a bit too much.
Always travelled biz to Asia on the company but usually upgraded to First on my own miles. Once you get used to first Class air travel to Asia it’s hard to do anything else, even domestically
let me take a moment and get defensive – just so you guys know, we’re of course flying coach, I don’t expect to expense meals, and the hotel room in question is $300.
why wouldn’t you expense meals? that’s the cheapest item among hotel, flight, etc
How far are you flying coach???
I have flown coach everywhere but try to upgrade past 4 hours. It depends on the company. Some companies are loose with travel money, but not many. I use miles.
I won’t fly coach to the west coast but between my miles and my partner’s the upgrades are usually easy.
That’s what I do. I just won’t pay for business or 1st class.
Except for one trip, I have always flow coach on business, but I have never taken a business trip out of the country.
For personal travel between coasts I usually fly on JetBlue, which has much more legroom than other carriers.
I like JetBlue too. They got a black eye with those delayed flights a while back but I think they are excellent. Every seat is like biz class.
m4l, the Waltzing Matilda was for many years the only gay bar in hong kong. From nathan road you go down Mody Road next to the Holiday Inn and it’s the second street on the left…Cornwall, I believe
All of that said…I’d give a lot to be traveling for work that I like doing.
For some reason, I’ve gotten bumped to first class on a number of flights over the years. LOVE that! : P
And if I’m gone for 2 weeks, it’s one carry on roller suitcase, one suitbag and that’s it.
NEVER DO I CHECK LUGGAGE, NOR DO I ALLOW ANYONE I’M TRAVELLING WITH TO DO SO
I’m with you, DIBS. I hate to check luggage unless we really have to. Besides, on longer trips I’m usually at the beach, which requires mostly just bathing suits, shorts and t-shirts. One rolly cart usually handles that nicely, if you know how to pack the right way—rolling clothes.
I wouldn’t check luggage if I could bring liquids on the flight. I need stuff. Hairstuff, face stuff, perfume. I am big into backing liquids.
My company has a “macho Japanese” culture, and it extends into business travel.
About 10 years ago, the Director of Overseas Sales came to visit a customer in New Jersey. The guy was about 55 when he made this trip. This was his itinerary:
-Fly to JFK, take limo to hotel in Manahattan, shower up, no nap.
-Drive to New Jersey to see customer (with my team)
-Drive back to Manhattan for dinner
-Drink everyone under the table. He was dtermined to be the last one standing. All of this after a 14 hour flight from Tokyo.
aaagggghhhh. I am getting the vapors just listening to that. Does it serve any kind of purpose? Of course he was also probably smoking like a chimney.
I cannot make sense with bad jetlag. Once (here in NY) I was so jetlagged coming back from Japan, my dinner companion was shouting Donatella! I had fallen asleep (for real!) with a glass of red wine suspended above my plate.
But that guy you are describing will probably be a vegetable by the time he is 65 and I will be kicking ass at 100.
“But Japanese are so extreme and they force you to fight your inner wimp for no reason at all except to prove your toughness.”
So they are pretty much just like frat boys?
yeah, the chinese business men in China are like what Benson describes – especially when you’re meeting the shot callers. if you dont smoke, dont drink hard liquor, and dont womanize, you aint someone they can trust hence NO DEAL with you!!!!!!!!
ha, M4L, I worked for a Japanese guy (with all Japanese clients) when I first started. That guy drank, smoked and generally did stuff I didn’t even think possible to be a tough guy. He also did more whoring than you could imagine. He would tell me about how he was taking all his customers out to get laid. Then he would tell me about it. (this was pre-sexual harrassment). I would generally excuse myself to go the the ladies room as a way of changing the subject. That plus golf every weekend. He had no time off from these people. He also drank himself into such bad health it was crazy. I learned a lot from that guy though. He was super smart and shrewd and he became a very very wealthy man. He was a major PIA but he really was a great teacher of some solid stuff too.
M4L, I feel like expensing my food seems petty (no pun intended), I dunno.
the company won’t mind and you would be the only exception on not expensing it
Dave, have you ever had to act like a macho straight dude for the benefit of a business deal?
jessi, most people don’t know i’m gay if i don’t let guard down
So have you ever had to go to a strip club and look at b oobies and act like you like it?
I’d sleep with a Korean lesbian before I’d sleep with a British man.
Jessi, i’ve been to many strip clubs both here and in Asia.
My best friend from US Trust wouldn’t believe I was gay after I told him so. he’s a hot Chinese guy that all the people who really knew me knew I was drooling over.
I used to go to a lot ot t i t ty bars with him
“well – maybe you’d think is cool to learn about being korean and lesbian with your travel roommate.”
she’s a work colleague – in order to continue to function as professionals, she cannot see me in my jammies and possible hear me use the toilet.
“in order to continue to function as professionals, she cannot see me in my jammies and possible hear me use the toilet.”
VERY JAPANESE, ESPECIALLY THE PART ABOUT THE TOILET
I don’t wear jammies in bed.
I leave you with that picture in your minds for the weekend
I’ve only done one strip club on a business trip. It was my second business trip and first strip club ever, and it was a super nasty place right outside of downtown Nashville.
It was about the same time that we had massive amounts of anti sexual harassment training due to a couple of lawsuits the company lost.
After that, there was a strict no strip club policy.
Never mind the toilet part…I wouldn’t want to be subjected to “chit chat” when I woke up in the AM. No way!!!
Starting to rain. Headed home to brooklyn
Catch you on the other side
I’m a morning person, so that part wouldnt bother me.
Later, Dave. Don’t forget to pick up the cheese.
I’m SO not a morning person, I’m barely conversational before 9 am unless I get up super early and drink a bunch of coffee.
Yeah, I’m at my most cheerful when I wake up and then slowly go down hill until I pass out while sitting up watching law and order.
“He would tell me about how he was taking all his customers out to get laid.”
No matter how many times I hear it, I still can’t believe that a sizable amount of the population has no problem paying for sex.
I’ve paid (indirectly) for lots of sex. as DIBS says often, it’s them flowers, dinners, drinks, dates, etc all prior to getting some
Exactly. For guys, sex is rarely free.
You’re lucky, jessi. It’s tough to be a night person in a morning people world.
I’ve never directly paid for sex, although I came close once at a strip club in New Orleans.
I’ve never paid for sex, either. : P
I can’t believe how sorry you guys sound for yourselves! It’s a small price to pay for our company! : P
I’m not complaining. The benefit is worth the cost more times than not.
Although, to be fair, I have heard stories about women that seriously abuse the date/gift thing.
nah, never been taken to the cleaners by that kind of girl. I aint no idiot plus I dont aim too too high whereby I need to try to up my odds with over splurging on the girl.
I know a super-wealthy guy who thought that “she (his gf at the time) would stop asking for stuff if he just showed her that she could have whatever she wanted and he would take care of her.” And I told him he was nuts. Of course, she never stopped asking, and increasingly asked for fancier and fancier stuff. He eventually got it, and dumped her. But not before spending a MINT on her.
did he also aim this sights too too high and felt the gifts were necessary to increase his odds?
Maybe. She was good looking, but not from a wealthy family. It might be that he thought he wouldn’t find someone as good looking as she was. But I think he thought it was the wealth disparity. And that she was just insecure. She used to ask him to buy clothes to wear to go places because she thought she wouldn’t fit in with her own clothes (not the case, not that fancy places.). I thought she was a con-artist.
“I’ve paid (indirectly) for lots of sex. as DIBS says often, it’s them flowers, dinners, drinks, dates, etc all prior to getting some ”
this is not at all the same thing as putting your genitals into the genitals of a stranger and then leaving a benjamin on the nightstand.
I wouldn’t be against paying for sex but somehow just never found it that compelling. I do pay for strippers to prance in front of me
“this is not at all the same thing as putting your genitals into the genitals of a stranger and then leaving a benjamin on the nightstand. ”
jessi, I totally agree.
I would have to be incredibly messed up drunk to directly pay someone for sex, and even then I don’t think I would.
Sex? What’s that???
shhhhhhhhhhhh. STFU and play your role man. you’re “I”talian – ie lovers
I thought I was okay with strip clubs. That was back when I’d only seen the strippers at the fantasy show bar in south jersey and the country bumpkins in thailand. Now that I’ve seen the chicks in Manhattan, I’m not as okay with it.
why the change??? the girls are too hot and the man can stray due to the better talents???
nothing to worry unless your man is filthy rich and/or got tons of game cause them mega hot chicks aint going to give him any play. it’s just be window shopping at most
Yeah, but I like to think of my man’s night out at the strip club as something almost comical, not actually sexy.
btw, those were my young days. Now, I’ve got no looks, no game, and no interest for that stuff now. am very content being a good hubby and dad
When I was in my 20′s, I went to a strip club with a guy who was in his 50′s. All the older guy kept saying was “That is someone’s child” and we all laughed it off. Now that I am a father and in my 50′s, I know exactly what he meant.
That sentiment is the most humanizing and compassionate one a person can have. If a person thinks that way, he will never mistreat a woman.
I am not morally opposed to strip clubs, but did feel somewhat sorry (after I sobered up) for the girls in the last one I went to in New Orleans – they were all drugged out and did not seem healthy at all.
On the other hand, I don’t know if the strip club made their life worse, other than by giving them money to keep up their habit.
Wasn’t that Chris Rock’s line…”Your job as a father is to keep your daughter off the pole!”
part of reason wife is very OK with me going to all those strip clubs back then with buddies etc was that she was supremely confident I had zero chance with those hot girls. She used to say to me “it’s possible but I doubt those girls are CHUBBY chasers”
Your wife is tough, M4L!
Does anyone not think Bob Marley was awesome?
I’ve got Redemption Song in my head.
yeah, he is great. I went to NYU for a video production course once.
I was semi-fed up with what I was doing professionally at the time and started taking a photography class too at Visual Arts.
In the video class, we were hooked up with other students into teams to make a little movie. It was fun. At the suggestion of one of the guys on the team, we made one on Bob Marley and we met all these Rastafarians in Brooklyn (I had no idea where at the time). It was funny how people gave themselves jobs. Two people took turns with camera work, others with editing and sound and I did the interviewing of these crazy Rasta musicians “Yah, mon, he was beautiful” and we even got people to perform and sing. But I sure heard a lot of Bob Marley music. Great stuff.
That’s an awesome Bob Marley story, D-tella.
When you going to CUBA?
gotta get the job. It will be a congratulations present to myself.
Got it. Job first, then trip. I’m very excited to find out where you land.
Also, as creepy aside – because of linkedin, I know you’re real name now. Since we’re both linked to CGar, it suggested that I might want to link to you. I saw your pic, so I knew it was you.
Thanks JB and re linkedin, sure.
She used to say to me “it’s possible but I doubt those girls are CHUBBY chasers”
Your wife is an ego crusher.
my retort was “Hey it worked on you didn’t it?? Love you too dear”
M4L, If Rob were here I feel like he would ask if you and your wife secretly hate each other.
nah, that would be the MIA poster from Park slope asking me that
I’m just happy that BH doesn’t go to strip clubs. Not sure how I would react to that.
I’d tell you that none of the girls are even good looking or have nice bodies, but if he goes in Manhattan, I’d be lying. If Chad ever needs to go, tell him you here they’ve got good ones in South Jersey.
I’m just going to bank on him not going. I wonder if he’s gone to any. I’m sure he must have.
no no no. that’s bad advice. reason being is a dude has better odds of “getting some” with the lesser talent at those joints. Those lesser talents are also more probable to negotiating to sleep with the dude to earn some more money. The hot honeys at the Manhattan clubs make a ton – ie less need to sleep around for more dough. again, manhattan joints = window shopping only. jersey joints = asking for trouble
But he wouldnt want some from a skank!!
Thank you, yes, I like to think BH is not about that!
there are some occasional “jewels” at those joints. plus it’s the “hey since I’m here in front of this sex buffet, let me order some” risk
Everyone pays for sex in some way.
It’s the cost that’s often hard to determine.
What a terrible thought. Not all sex is a transaction.
I asked a guy about this the other day, I said: is it true that women control the relationship because they’ve got the power to withhold sex? (I assumed this was just some fembot mumbo jumbo) and he said yeah, that’s pretty much how it works.
Do dudes care that much about sex?
People really shouldn’t use sex like that.
Oh I agree. That sounds really mean. I only mentioned it because I was shocked that it would actually work.
It doesn’t have to be a “terrible” thought cobble.
Some pay in Love
Some in Honor
Some in Pride
Some in Time
Some in Cash
No matter how, it’s like two bodies in motion,
they have inertia and when they come in contact with each other
there is a cost.
I think attaching the word “pay” is just not right, legion. You have some strange ideas. Let’s just agree to disagree on this one and move on.
Pat Benatar had a hit song called:
Sex as a Weapon.
I think she’s playing at B.B. King’s Blue’s House this month.
It is a terrible thought if you’re only giving love, honor, pride and time in order to get your wenis satisfied.
jessi and cobble are missing the philosophical aspects of my comment.
we all have needs and although sex is often linked to love it is certainly not exclusive to that idea.
There is a cost to love, sometimes it’s heartache or loss of one’s self.
There is a cost to sex, sometimes it’s love.
Don’t underestimate my or jessi’s intellect, legion. Jackass.
I’m not missing anything. Keep your creepy ideas to yourself.
I remember when my sister got married, she was having a tough time with her husband (they split after a few years). She told me with this intensity “Relationships with men are power struggles”.
Ok, she was having a tough time and the guy was not nice (understatement) and she split from him and married one of the nicest men who ever lived. But that resonated with me and there is always a give and take, and sometimes a lot of take, and things go in flows, and s
