Yesterday an appeals court upheld last year’s decision barring controversial architect Robert Scarano from filing plans with the Department of Buildings. According to The Real Deal, the decision finds, in part, that “we agree that the petitioner’s actions in submitting misleading photographs, falsely certifying that all objections had been resolved, and claiming entitlement to extra floor area resulting from a nonexistent community facility are supported by substantial evidence and warrant the finding that DOB can no longer rely on him to submit honest paperwork.” Scarano said in a statement that he will examine further options and that his firm will continue to serve its clients. An article in Crain’s says the decision noted that other architects with Scarano’s firm can still file plans with the city.

So he’s punished but the architects who still work for him will be able to keep filing plans. Somehow I don’t think Scarano will be hurting all that much, except maybe from the bad press. That’s too bad- because this was a man who really had everything and still felt the need to lie and cheat. What makes the city think his employees will be any more honest than he is?
