Reader Simon Shimshilashvili sent in the photos above, which document this morning’s maiden voyage of the East River Ferry from the North Williamsburg launch. As the pics show, Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn were among the folks in attendance. The service is going to be free through June 24th, and after that it’ll cost $4 for a one-way ticket, $12 for an unlimited day pass, and $140 for an unlimited monthly pass. The ferry will run every 20 minutes during peak weekday hours and have stops connecting Brooklyn Bridge Park, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint to Manhattan.

  1. I found it really slow and pokey and not on schedule. It is basically a big subsidy from all of us for Bloomberg waterfront condo developer pals in Williamsburg and LIC. This at a time when buses and subways are being cut, eliminated, etc. I actually doubt this will work. From Dumbo to Financial District is quick and from LIC to 34th (but then you need a shuttle bus OR an additional fare for the MTA.) I like boats but unless you live within a few blocks of the waterfront, I think most people will stick to the subway.
