Streetsblog has a report on the DOT’s plans to overhaul the streets leading up to Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1, particularly Old Fulton Street, as the area sees an increase in foot traffic. The proposal addresses conditions like the lack of a crosswalk at Old Fulton and Front; illegal parking on medians at Old Fulton and the BQE; and the long pedestrian crossing distance at Front and York streets. As Streetsblog puts it: “The redesign aims to impose some order, give priority to pedestrians, and prevent buses from unloading passengers and making U-turns at the end of Old Fulton Street. Tour buses will be encouraged to load and unload on Furman Street, out of the way of the main walking and biking routes to the park.” The drawing above gives a sense of how the department is looking to transform Old Fulton at Water, with changes that include a pedestrian median and expanding the north sidewalk with a plaza. There will also be bike lanes connecting Dumbo with the waterfront greenway.
