Victoria Brown Reading at the Greenlight Bookstore
Brooklyn-based author Victoria Brown, a native of Trinidad, worked as a full-time nanny when she first arrived in New York at sixteen. Her debut novel Minding Ben (begun as her master’s thesis at the UK’s University of Warwick) follows the story of Grace, a Trini girl who finds a job as a nanny with a wealthy Manhattan couple. The novel nimbly lays out the intricate and complicated world of urbanite nannies, as well as the vibrant but challenging Brooklyn Caribbean community many immigrants return to on their days off. Victoria reads from her novel and discusses how her experiences have shaped her as a writer. Thursday, May 5, 7:30 PM, Greenlight Bookstore, 686 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY

RePOP Art Show and Reception for Artist Kris Krohn
RePOP of Brooklyn is hosting an art show and reception featuring the paintings of artist Kris Krohn as part of their ongoing series featuring artwork that compliments RePOP’s selection of mid-century, industrial, deco and vintage furnishings and decor. Krohn writes of his series Timless Interiors on view at RePOP that the works approach reality in which our perception of time and space is altered by the atmospheric rendering of traditional rooms, consisting of finely detailed baroque furniture and interiors amidst bold washes of color. Friday, May 6th, from 7:30-11:00pm, RePOP, 68 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11205.

  1. So the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition is having a Cinco de Mayo fundraiser with no local Mexican restaurants/businesses involved, and with a logo that reduces Mexican culture to a chile wearing a sombrero. This really makes me want to attend and support the organization. Oh vey!
