northside32011.jpgToday there’s yet another story about residents who claim a new condo’s construction leaves much to be desired, though unlike with 53 Boerum, it doesn’t appear a lawsuit is involved: The Post reports that some owners at Northside Piers allege units in the towers have a bunch of flaws, particularly when it comes to the windows. According to the story: “[T]he biggest issue is the project’s signature feature — massive windows, many of which offer spectacular Manhattan skyline views. The grand views, the residents say, came at a steep price. The windows are thin and the seams between the panes allow wind and rain to easily come through, residents say. Some residents have taped around the window panes, but they say rain and air still blows in. A Post reporter noticed a bad draft coming through the windows in two condos even though they were heavily covered in tape.” Developer Toll Brothers says the allegations involve “isolated situations” and the towers’ construction is sound.

  1. I know nothing about this particular building or the company that built it, but let’s just be clear that during the recent real estate boom, there was an orgy of building going on in NYC, and much of it was done by less than reputable contractors hiring less than reputable subcontractors who paid people as little in wages as possible and not surprisingly the money saved in wages has now been passed on to the suckers who bought these condos who will need to pay to have the shoddy work fixed. The developers and contractors made a nice profit, the apartments were sold at ridiculous prices, some families in Mexico got some remittances sent home from their relatives, and we will be reading stores about bad construction for years to come. Greed kills.

  2. my whiney, moonfaced baby is in a nanny share situation in one of these (similar but smaller) new condos in the burg area. The residents have sued for horrifically sloppy work, and won pretty big. All of these developers are greedfaces and can suck the poop right off of Rob’s pieface.

  3. snaps- maybe not, if they take care of the problem. I respect a company that fixes a problem instead of issuing self-serving press releases that talk about how high quality their work is despite complaints. The majority of the building seems happy with their apartments so that also says a lot.

BSM- I’m afraid to ask how you will be adapting them. I assume they will be drafty though. ;D

  4. True, and it may knock a few $$ of the price. And, now, the developer/builder will be forever linked to shoddy window installation and/or window quality. Stinks all around.
