A reader sent in the photo above this morning along with a note saying that there’s “work going on the street level at 2 Metrotech. Looks like a 5 Guys is coming.” A spokeswoman for the Metrotech BID confirmed that the burger chain is indeed coming to 2 MetroTech, as do DOB permits. There’s also another DOB permit for a new eatery at 2 MetroTech that’s rumored to be a French restaurant. Finally, in other MetroTech rumors, The Eagle had a story today about how a Staples is said to be coming to the former Sid’s Hardware space at 345 Jay Street. GMAP

  1. Totally, 11217. I know it’s not limited to this spot (but I agree that some neighborhoods seem to “get it” more than others). The MetroTech 6pm shut down is extra weird because… doesn’t a college take up half of it? Or actually 2 colleges? Colleges don’t shut down at 6pm. The NYU Poly gym is open at night. Those hungry kids coupled with all the new residents equal $$$. Who are these idiot business owners and why don’t they get it?

  2. I appreciate Chicken’s estimation, “Can’t have too many of those things.” After reading chris’s list, I was beginning to wonder. Speaking of which, let’s include the Downtown Ale House in the bracket.

  3. It’s a problem all over Brooklyn, robotpony. Honestly if everyone pushed back their closing hours by a couple hours, I’d think we’d have a lot fewer places going out of business. What Brooklyn business owners don’t seem to realize yet is that people in New York work a lot and they work long hours. Some people do still want to eat dinner at 9 or 10pm. You go to places in Europe and every restaurant is packed at 10pm on a Monday. Here the idiot business owners close at 7pm and can’t figure out why they aren’t making any money.

  4. As a resident of the area, I hope they (and the other existing food vendors in MetroTech) realize the incredible resident boom the area has had and extend their hours accordingly. As the Eagle reported the other day: a 2,900% increase in the past decade. All the new buildings equal new residents who are there 24/7. I walk through MetroTech every night and every single one of those businesses is closed. It seems like such a missed opportunity. If some restaurants or take-out places stayed open, I guarantee they’d get business. And if a full-fledged restaurant opened up (as opposed to the existing take-out places, etc) it could make what is actually a very nice promenade an evening destination.
Come on, people. See the opportunity!
