Curbed breaks down all the stories today about the East River ferry service that’s beginning in June: Brooklyn service will include stops at “Greenpoint’s India Street, North Fifth Street (finally putting the Pier in Northside Piers) and Schaefer Landing in Williamsburg and Dumbo’s Fulton Ferry Landing”; “Rides will cost either $3 or $5.50 each, depending on which price zone a passenger falls into, so a South-Burg-to-Midtown trek would cost $11 roundtrip”; and “Weekend service will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., bicycles are allowed on board, and summer stops will include Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 and (on Fridays) Governors Island.” On a self-serving note: The weekend service will make it pretty easy for Manhattanites to get to the Williamsburg branch of the Brooklyn Flea that’s kicking off in a few months.

  1. the problem with ferry service is that most of the piers are isolated on the fringes of the neighborhoods they serve.

If they want to rely on ferries to grow the areas they serve, they will have to be patient.

  2. I just wish the city would run ferries to Gov. Island in the spring and fall. Crazy that this service starts so late and ends so soon. I’d even pay for it. But this dream of commuters using ferries en masse won’t ever happen.
