119-95-st-1110-ten-largest-homes-in-brooklyn

Property Shark has compiled a list of the ten largest single-family homes in Brooklyn, and, in a city known for its small spaces, these places are big. The largest home – and the oldest – is 119 95th Street, built in 1847 with 29,126 square-feet of space. This Greek Revival wood home in Bay Ridge (known as the James Farrell Residence, after the Tammany Hall pol) was built originally on the waterfront until it was moved here in 1913. The other nine homes are between 12,196 and 16,914 square feet. Six were built after 1995. And according to this map, they are concentrated in South Brooklyn. The pictures are of the top five properties that did not have under-construction photos via Property Shark, check out the full list after the jump.

  1. There is definitely a mistake here. This house is not that large. The category is not clear. Are they talking about historic homes etc. There are many huge homes, McMansions etc. This classic tasteful home is clearly not one of them.

  2. I just went by the Farrell House and 122 76th street.

There is NO WAY Farrell house is bigger than 122 76th St. and how could it be close to 30,000 sq. ft. unless they’re counting the basement. Wish I could find a nice pic of 76th st house to link to show the enormity of it. Much bigger than Farrell.

  3. I too am wondering about the accuracy of the list. There are a couple of massive (what I believe to be one family) brownstones in Brooklyn Heights that I would estimate to be as big as some of these. One that comes to mind is the gigantic modernized one by the Promenade (always forget if it’s at the bottom of Pierrepont or Montague on Columbia Heights) that is rumoured to be owned by a Hollywood producer. It’s enormous.

  4. I was in the Farrell house a few years ago on a tour of neighborhood homes. It was gorgeous. I still think about it. Not only were the original details and architecture amazing but the owners have done a beautiful job with decorating, very understated letting the historic house speak for itself. Two very large but simple fireplaces in the living room! Modern kitchen, luxurious baths. Loved it!

  5. What about the Commandant’s Mansion that was originally part of the BK Navy Yard, and is now a private residence. It is located at the intersection of Evans and Little Streets in Vinegar Hill. I have always believed that that was the largest in NYC.

Just a visual inspection indicates that it is far larger than others on this list. I, too, believe that the list is highly inaccurate
