Right across from the recently demolished 200 Smith Street is another under-construction storefront. A tipster sent this picture in of a boarded-up 202 Smith Street, which now has signage for ‘Mocha 1,’ a gourmet deli. Previously, the spot was just a regular old bodega. Sign o’ the times? GMAP

  1. While I like them both, bod/dibs, I’ve always felt the quality at Staubitz was a smidge better. But its like arguing BMW vs. Mercedes.

The staff at both are awesome. Ask a question, expect to get a serious education on meat prep & recipes. Places like that are what make a neighborhood great – and you’ll never see it again, so enjoy it while we still have it.

  2. i dont care about these. they are hard working business people just catering to idiots who dont know they are just shopping in a fauxdega. there’s a lot of money to be made by idiots in big cities these days.

my bodega on 4th and union just renovated, and now sells all the yuppie fauxdega type stuff. raised the prices a bit too on other things, but i like them so ill continue to shop there.

  3. I like the bodegas that also have “farm(s)” in their names.

We recently had a visitor from very rural Central Oregon and the concept of a bodega fascinated him. Out there, you go to the 200,000 square foot Safeway or Albertson’s. For quickie crap, there’s the 7-11.

Bodegas on every corner was a revelation to him.
