Our loyal South Slope tipster sent us some photos of the demolition that has begun at 613-617 5th Avenue, the buildings that housed the Associated Supermarket before the recent fire. A vacate order is in place for 613, 615, 617, and 619 5th Avenue. This is particularly sad news for the Mambo Lounge and tenants of 613 5th Avenue, which we were told did not burn down, but sustained smoke and water damage. Residents were hoping to be allowed to get back into the building, but it looks like that’s not going to happen.

  1. Also, I believe the building housing the Mambo lounge will be saved. Demo is going super slow in what appears to be an attempt to not disturb the structure housing the Mambo lounge. I really hope they are able to save as much as possible.

  2. There was nothing to be saved…the ceilings/floor collapsed and their items (if they didn’t burn up- which I highly doubt given the fire’s intensity) got mixed into the burned out rubble from the grocery store. It’s all one big burned out jumble right now.

So far they have only knocked out remaining roof portions and also started to knock in some interior walls that remained in place.
