Well, that was pretty crazy. (Or as the videographer in the second video on the jump said, “Holy Shit!”) It only lasted a few minutes, but sometime around 5:30 p.m. yesterday a small tornado touched down in Brownstone Brooklyn, wreaking havoc on many trees, cars and houses and leaving other spots virtually untouched. We took a walk around Clinton Hill in the aftermath and have included a lot of the photos we took along with a bunch sent in by readers. Thanks so much to everyone for sending them in.

  1. Many trees in Prospect Heights have lost their tops. 20ft up the main trunk and whammo — the rest of the tree has literally been snapped right off. I have completely new sightlines from my backyard looking east. While the storm may not have qualified as a midwestern-style house destroyer, this twisting action seems to give some credence to at least a small tornado. Oh, and we have a 10ft satellite dish from a neighbor’s roof wedged in the oak tree behind us. Looks like a piece of trash from the last space shuttle.

  2. wonton, yes, Walter whats-his-name. Friendly place.

btw : what;s this about? Free money?
Call 311 to report any damage to your home or business sustained from last night’s storm. In order to qualify for disaster relief assistance, New York City must estimate the storm’s total effect on city residents and employees. Be prepared to answer questions about the extent of your property’s damage

  3. cmu-very sorry about your roof! I’ve guided my coop through a couple of roof renovations, and it is a process that you really have to watch carefully. My building got badly cheated by an unscrupulous roofer (I wasn’t involved in this one). If the estimate sounds too cheap to be true, it probably is. 9 to 12 a square foot seems to be the ballpark for a complete re-do. You may have asbestos to deal with, too.

I’ve made claims with Allstate, once for home damage and once for a theft. Both claims in the 2-3K area. My premiums didn’t go up and I had a very positive experience with Allstate. YMMV. Is your agent the one on 7th Av?

  4. Carnade, I was running with my dog on the water at Ikea… staring at the looming dark green sky and thinking “this doesn’t look good”. We took cover under the garage there, but even that wasn’t much help. Once it eased up a bit I was in such a rush to get us home that I didn’t get a chance to check out the damage so I enjoyed your pictures very much, thank you.
