We heard a number of complaints from folks who live within earshot of the New York State Department building at 55 Hanson Place last night. Here was one email that came in shortly after midnight: “As I write this (with earlplugs in at midnight, and all my windows closed) there is a buzzsaw being used and scaffolding being loudly hammered in place on the sides of the Hanson Place NY State Dept. building. It’s been going on since I arrived home from work at 5:30.” We checked with DOB about this and while there are approved permits in place for a scaffolding like this, a press liaison could not find any reason why there would have needed to be nocturnal work going on. Anyone know anything more about it. Update: The Local was told by the New York Office of General Services that they had to put up scaffolding last night to protect against pieces of the facade that were coming down. GMAP

  1. This is not the first time in recent weeks I’ve heard construction noises from that direction. I thought it was AY work but now the mystery appears to have been solved. Lets hope it does not continue…

  2. The building is being named for Shirley Chisholm, with a dedication ceremony coming very soon (perhaps as early as next week, if I remember right). Presumably, her name is being engraved on the building. Perhaps someone procrastinated on the job, and is now hurrying to get it done before the dedication event?
