A few months ago Barney’s Co-Op, the less expensive line of Barney’s clothing that is coming to Atlantic Avenue, presented a rendering to Community Board Six’s Landmarks and Land Use Board. Although the committee gave its blessing at the time, there was some concern expressed about the decorative metal grill proposed for some of the storefront windows. Looks like the architects took that feedback into consideration: The rendering above (which we just got our hands on) is what was ultimately presented to the Landmarks Preservation Committee.

  1. the co-op on 17th street is always crowded when I’m there, which is pretty often, and that’s kind of a crappy mid-block location. I dont see why this Atlantic location wont do well.

I actually like the coops better than the main Barney’s store b/c I like that they’re a bit more casual (and the main Barney’s store is just too damn big), but have to admit I dont think I’ve ever bought anything for full price there.

  2. “I predict that it will do as well as Urban Outfitters.”

I have a very good friend who manages one of the Urban Outfitters stores in Manhattan and was partially responsible for getting the Brooklyn store off the ground.

She said they give each new store 3 years to get their groove basically and start turning a profit. She said the first year was slow for the store on Atlantic and now it’s beating profit estimates and is doing very well.

  3. Let’s see…the location for Barney’s Co-op are:

    Atlanta
    Chicago
    Houston
    Chevy Chase, Maryland
    Philadelphia
    Riverside, CA
    Los Angeles
    Aventura, CA
    Santa Monica, CA
    Austin, TX
    Troy, MI
    Miami Beach
    Costa Mesa, CA
    Georgetown
    Westchester, NY
    Glendale, CA
    San Diego
    Soho
    Chelsea

And you don’t think one can survive in Brooklyn? I can tell you I will be one of their customers. I love a lot of their stuff.

  4. I think Barney’s Co-op is more popular in LA than NYC. Not sure why, but agreed that it’s kind of a weird store in New York — a little too expensive for everyday shopping, but not actually sufficiently tailored or attractive to command premium (by NY standards) prices.

I predict that it will do as well as Urban Outfitters.
