The Fruit and Vegetable Market at 378 7th Avenue is expanding into the old A.D. Shaye Realty storefront next door, which, for some reason, has had a picture of a cat in its window for quite some time now. We spoke with a person involved with the project who said excitedly, “It’s gonna be big.” Judging from the construction site, it did look like they’d have enough space to turn it into a small grocery store. 1. OMG. My father owned this fruit and vegetable store in the 80s. He sold it to buy a store in Flatbush – obviously a bad business decision. Along with his decision to turn down a brownstone in Park Slope for $150k and buy a house in Staten Island instead. *sigh* Hindsight is always 50/50.

  2. Their produce is always fantastic, far better than Union market. Green beans, baby bok choy, grapes are museum quality. They also have a very large selection of living flowers. Very friendly neighborhood store. Wish them the best of luck.

  3. Agreed – the couple that own this store are really nice. But if they expand then what will happen the the “Village Market” who also carries a wide variety of produce and goods on 11th and 7th?

AD shaye now are located in the Elan Building on 1st and 4th avenue

  4. Excellent news! This is my go-to produce market in the neighborhood, the place you can count on when you need a ripe avocado or great summer fruit. Union Market’s stuff is displayed more artistically but it often tastes bland.

  5. The couple who runs it is really sweet – and while dogs are not allowed in the store, the lady shop keeper always gives a treat to a dog waiting outside.

Agreed about high quality of produce/misc stuff there.

  6. This is one of the great little treasures of the South Slope. I was worried about them when Union Market opened, so I do my best to patronize them. Their stuff is really good, not only the produce, but they cram an incredible amount of all that organic and tofu stuff that is so beloved in the nabe. Glad to hear they are doing well enuf to expand.

btw, they have heirloom and NJ tomatoes. Union Market? Not yesterday.
