A tipster alerted us that Mack’s 140, the American bar and grill at 140 7th Avenue, has been closed up. According to FIPS, the owner bailed on the place and is now bringing in partners who will take over and turn it into an Italian restaurant. Had anyone been there? The consensus seems like the ambiance wasn’t all that inspiring. GMAP

  1. This location already was an Italian restaurant. It was Elementi before it became Mack’s. My complaint with Elementi was that the ambience just didn’t work. There was no Italian feel. It was very sterile – The tile floor, the big bright light fixtures. So then it became Mack’s. They changed basically nothing but the menu. Now it had a sports bar menu without a sports bar feel. Again, the ambience just wasn’t right. And that sports bar menu was expensive – $14 burgers. The space has a great location and great layout. It could be a good Italian restaurant. It could be a good sports bar. It could be practically any kind of restaurant and be successful. But it has to feel like whatever it’s going to be.

  2. Dry burgers…zero ambiance…chaotic decor…what’s with the pinball machine?…tentative service…

My husband and I only needed one visit to know that this place just didn’t get it. The owner obviously thought that you just need to hang a sign out front and open the door to be a success. We’re not “foodies”, just people who like good food and know when it’s being done right. 7th Ave. is the perfect place for a good burger joint. What a huge disappointment Macks was. I don’t think we need another Italian restaurant. And it better be damn good if that’s what’s coming in here. Othewise it’s Chef Boyardee here we come…
