Late yesterday Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council announced a budget deal that would, among other things, avoid any pool closures, including the Douglass and Degraw pool in Gowanus. (20 firehouses were also spared the axe.) So get your swim trunks ready—all public pools open this Sunday Tuesday for the season.

  1. This is good. The pool is a real favorite in that neighborhod. My kid used to swim here back in the days when I rented on DeGraw St. I at first thought it was awful too, but when I finally took him over there it turned out it’s a pretty nice pool.

  2. Not such great news on libraries, however. Branches were saved but at the cost of one day a week for most of them–which probably means almost no weekend service. Which does preserve access for schoolchildren and the people who most need access to computers, etc., during the week–but limits it greatly for those with jobs, families who like to go together, etc.

  3. Definitely good news about the firehouses! The one on Coretelyou and Westminster was apparently on the list… and living a block away, I KNOW they are very very busy. It was shocking to hear they were even being considered!

Good news about the pool too… though, it’s less personally interesting to me. I swim at Norah’s pool.
