janes-carousel-rendering-0510.jpgMaybe this rendering’s been out there before, but its appearance in a Brooklyn Eagle article this morning is the first time we can recall seeing it. Our first reactions are that (a) it’s much closer to the water than what we’d assumed from written descriptions and (b) even with the Jean Nouvel-designed pavilion, it certainly doesn’t look like it’s going to interfere with any views of the Brooklyn Bridge or Lower Manhattan. We’re not sure what all the grumbling is about (other than general anti-Walentas sentiment that’s built up among some Dumbo old-timers over the years)—the painstakingly-restored antique carousel seems like a beautiful addition to the park to us. Surely there are other things worth losing sleep over.

  1. Imagine the amazing experience of riding these horses in this location? What a wonderful gift, how connected and iconic of an experience this will be for the children of Brooklyn. It’s going to be the Brooklyn version of ice skating in Rockefeller Center. This is how great cities are made.

  2. the sound of the M Bridge is not so noticeable in this location. The word ‘block’ usually means get in the way of, obstruct. It seems that we can see entire bridge…
if Jane Walentas is picking music, it will be tasteful
again, lose sleep over something else in any case this is a done deal folks

  3. The Prospect Park enclosure is like a heavy prison cell… I’m not a fan. Is it historic? Regardless, I don’t like it. You’re at the park on horsies, but you’re in a dark building with iron bars.

  4. I hope it has a real calliope and is good and LOUD just as a carousel should be!! This looks fabulous. Jane has a free pass to heaven for doing this, IMHO, and the siting is perfect: a tiny jewel under an icon.

  5. As someone who used to work at the PP carousel, I think the worst aspect is going to be carousel music. Like having an icecream truck parked there 24/7. Mind numbing if you’re not just passing through.
