The BOTD is a no-frills look at interesting structures of all types and from all neighborhoods. There will be old, new, important, forgotten, public, private, good and bad. Whatever strikes our fancy. We hope you enjoy.

Address: 379 Washington Avenue, between Greene and Lafayette Avenues
Name: The Mohawk Apartments, originally the Mohawk Hotel
Neighborhood: Clinton Hill (Clinton Hill Historic District)
Year Built: 1904
Architectural Style: Beaux Arts
Architects: Neville and Bagge
Landmarked: Yes

Why chosen: When built, this was the Mohawk Hotel, an upscale residential hotel, with the latest in luxury and modern conveniences for its patrons. Originally, the hotel had a large dining room on site, with maid and porter services, room service, etc. It was the finest hotel in Clinton Hill. The photo can’t show all, but this is a huge building, with two large flanking wings around a large center entrance. When I first came to Clinton Hill to visit Pratt in the late 1970’s, the Mohawk was sealed up and this was a dangerous corner. When I finally moved to Brooklyn in the 80’s, the building was being renovated into apartments. This is one of Clinton Hill’s best buildings, designed by architects who built some of Manhattan’s Upper West Side grand apartment buildings.

  1. My father and grandfather owned the Mohawk Hotel when I was a little girl. I still have the grandfathers clock from the ballroom. We had to shave the bottom to get it in our home, but it works and brings back many memories. I loved that place.

  2. yay! this is my building and i can’t believe i live in a place like this. it really is an incredible structure.

as far as i know, it’s a rental building (there’s a sign on the way to the laundry room that says “rental office”).

  3. I second that. This building and royal castle are on my “aspire to live in someday” short list, and it’d be lovely to know the real estate infoz.

However, great pick and information, as usual!

  4. It definitely has an Upper West Side look to it. Could be on Riverside Drive or Central Park West. It looks like they did a great job with the restoration. The curved cornices are very elegant.
