Closing Bell: Another One Bites the Dust

Mother nature collided with machine this morning when this mature London Plane tree toppled over onto a sanitation truck on Seventh Avenue between Carroll and President Streets. It’s unclear if the tree fell from the weight of snow or whether the plow on the truck may have clipped the tree guard.

  • Most people know them as “Sycamores.”

  • the tree in the alleyway that my bedroom faces was very very droopy after this last snowstorm. i didnt even know a tree was there (it was coming in from someones back yard..) anyway, all i kept thinking when i was sleeping was the scene in Poltergeist where carol anne and her brother were sleepign and the tree in their backyard was looming into their window in a very scary way.

  • ??Closing bell?? Where’d the day go?

  • As always, classic rock has the answers:

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

    The trouble with the maples
(And they’re quite convinced they’re right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
    As the maples scream ‘Oppression!’
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights
‘The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light’
Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet, axe and saw

  • Snark, are you sure you never wrote any of the Forbidden Broadway productions?

  • about time someone/something slap those sanitation trucks. they’re the most inconsiderate drivers. they dont give a flying F who’s behind, etc. they just take up 2 lanes, double park pretty wide to collect garbage, take their sweet time, never yield to other drivers,…

hope the tree did more damage than the pic would indicate

  • Biff – I’m just channeling one of your fellow Canadians…

  • the revenge of the trees!

they are also known as london plane trees, btw

  • oh leave the poor sanitation workers alone more4less lol. they have to work with bedbugs everyday!!!!

  • Good thing sanitation was there to clean this up.

  • Rob, “poor” is not the label I would slap onto these dudes who are the highest paid among the city workers – more than teachers, police, firemen,…..

  • “The native American Sycamore can be differentiated from the hybrid London Planetree by looking at the fruit or seedballs which turn brown in the fall and are more visible when the leaves down. The American Sycamore has l seed ball hanging on a long stalk. The London Planetree usually has 2 seedballs hanging on one stalk. The London Planetree, a cross between the Sycamore of the Eastern United States and the Oriental Planetree of southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, is remarkably resistant to air pollution.”

Also, planetrees leave more of a mottled pattern when they crush your car.

  • Am I the only one who sees the snake descending the tree, near the passanger side of the vehicle, coming to eat me?

  • Don’t eat the apple he offers, pigeon. It’s the oldest trick in the (good) book.

  • The Underhill Avenue neighborhood folk are still mourning the loss of a large tree that was felled by a snowplow a couple years ago.

  • well you couldnt pay me enough to handle the trash of nyc, so i think they do deserve more than most civil servants. plus you will always smell like garbage when youre a trashman. ick! it’s a noble profession that should be highly compensated. (tho i think teachers, etc should as well), but it doesnt take much to become a teacher. anyone can become one. it’s quite difficult to decide one day you want to deal with trash all day.

  • I’m glad we didn’t go a whole day without instructions on how best to conduct a balls inspection. If you look at the balls you can tell the difference!!
