Demolition, Recycling Underway at Brooklyn Bridge Park

The Cold Storage warehouse on Furman Street close to Old Fulton (full name: The National Cold Storage Company and Martins Stores, says Forgotten NY) is in the process of being demolished as part of the creation of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The old building is actually three adjoining structures, and the southernmost of them was the first to be completely torn down a couple of weeks ago. As you can see from the photos, the northernmost section closest to Pier 1 is about half-way there. The middle section will follow. What’s very cool about the demolition is that the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation has elected to salvage and either reuse or recycle as much of the building materials as possible. As a construction worker reminded us yesterday when we were nosing around, the southern pine beams will be used to construct benches on Pier 1; we also spied neatly stacked piles of old red bricks which we suspect will find their way into the park at some point. Nice going.
