The New Yorker Festival
Enjoy two days worth of music and talks by bands such as Dirty Projectors, House of Ladosha, Jubilee, Liturgy, and Loudon Wainwright III. A portion of the ticket proceeds from this festival will be donated to Harlem Children’s Zone, which offers a holistic network of education, social services, and community-building programs to children and families in Harlem. Online tickets are no longer available for The New Yorker Festival but 10 % of tickets to all events will be available at Cedar Lake Theatre, at 547 West 26th Street (between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues), on Friday, October 16th, from 12 noon to 4 P.M. Harvest Day Celebration
There will be a wonderful array of special activities planned for our community including outdoor activity stations (weather permitting); a fabulous fall lunch menu that includes fresh produce from Greenmarket and hand-picked fresh lettuce and basil by our students, from our own PS 29 Children’s Garden; a presentation by farmer and land steward Scott Chaskey of the Peconic Land Trust’s Quail Hill organic community farm; followed by Tom Chapin, Grammy Award-winning musician, entertainer, singer, songwriter and storyteller. Brooklyn Flea
The Brooklyn Flea takes place in Ft. Greene on Saturday and its historic Brooklyn Bridge location on Sunday. Both locations feature a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and food. Saturday, October 17. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues. Sunday, October 18. 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. In Dumbo, underneath the Brooklyn Bridge at the corner of Water and New Dock Street.

Book Swap
This is super easy and fun – bring a book and receive a book. LICH staff members will also be on hand to meet the community and will conduct free blood pressure screening and an asthma information table at the park. Books will also be available for sale at $1 or less. All proceeds and remainder books will be donated to the Hospital by the Cobble Hill Association. Saturday, October 17. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Henry and Pacific Streets, Long Island College Hospital (LICH) Sitting Park.

It’s My Park! Day
Find out what lives in the East River and help clean the shoreline to create a healthy habitat for the variety of species that call it home! Participants will join volunteers working throughout the city in their local parks on It’s My Park! Day to enhance and beautify New York. Experts from the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and the Coastal Marine Resource Center will use a 30-foot seining net to catch, identify and discuss an amazing array of creatures that live in the East River before releasing them back to their homes. The group will then all work together to clear the shoreline of trash and debris. Central Bushwick Walking Tour
Local historian Adam Schwartz will lead a walking tour through central Bushwick. The tour will begin at the Myrtle-Wyckoff subway station and venture towards Broadway, passing the newest firehouse in the city, Hope Gardens, St. Barbara’s Catholic Church and the Bushwick-Linden Garden along the way. Irondale Center’s 2nd Annual Fall Fest
This free, all day event is a great way to get to know Irondale and experience some great performances and visual art. There will be food and drinks provided, free workshops, previews of the Irondale ensembles recent work, jugglers, face painters and more. All are welcome. Electronics Recycling Event
This is your chance to help clean-up and beautify the neighborhood! Sponsored by 3r Living in conjunction with the Park Slope Civic Council’s Clean Sweep program, this electronics recycling event will take place in two locations, simultaneously, in the neighborhood. Saturday, October 17. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. 4th Street @ 5th Avenue & 9th Street in front of the YMCA.

Mount Beacon Incline Railway Hike
Enjoy the colors of autumn and the history of a lost railway on this exciting day-long hike up Mt. Beacon. Jim Bopp, vice president of the Mt. Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society, leads the two-hour hike up the scenic elevation overlooking Beacon, New York and will discuss the history of the decommissioned Mt. Beacon line. Cost includes train fare on Metro-North Railroad from Grand Central Terminal, ground transportation in Beacon, and lunch. Note: this hike is strenuous. Scandals, Scalawags & Murder Most Foul

Visit some of Green-wood Cemetery’s most nefarious residents with tour guide Ruth Edebohls. Green-Wood is the final resting place of many famous and heroic people, but some of its deceased denizens have a more blemished reputation. Murderers and the murdered, a sullied adulteress, a famous courtesan, gangsters, con men and schemers lie next to those of a more virtuous disposition. This walking tour will be hilly and strenuous – wear good walking shoes. Advance tickets available. No reservations are necessary. Sunday, October 18. 1 p.m. $10. Schoolfest
Schoolfest is the ultimate open house for Greenpoint, Williamsburg and now, Bushwick parents: almost 80 schools, day care centers, and other service providers for children in these neighborhoods, all at a single venue. They have added a college component, with the conviction that parents can never start too early to consider college as a viable future outcome for their children. The Prospect Heights House Tour
The self-guided tour will include 11 wonderful homes and apartments. Prospect Heights was recently featured on the show This Old House and was commended by LPC Chairman Tierney for its architectural integrity and diversity, scale, tree-lined streets and residential character. Come and wander through these houses. Tickets may be purchased at Forest Floor Antiques (659 Vanderbilt Avenue) for $20 prior to the day of the tour and for $25 on the day of the tour. Daffodil Day
KARMABrooklyn and WKAG present Daffodil Day. Join your neighbors by planting daffodil bulbs on Church Avenue and its side streets. In the spring, watch the flowers bloom! Connie, of Connie’s Cafe (corner of Church Avenue and E. 5th Street), will be donating coffee and muffins for volunteers.     I suppose the Brooklyn Flea must have been at its Brooklyn Bridge location since the 1800’s or thereabouts?
