There are no new building plans filed yet, but demolition has ramped up at the four small buildings at 55-63 Flatbush Avenue Extension where an 80-room Best Western is expected to rise. Frankly, we’re surprised they’re moving ahead right now but maybe this is what they call a greenshoot.

  1. @ BrooklynGreene. From what I understand, there used to be such an arch or some kind of gateway. The seated statues that are on the corners of the Brooklyn Museum facade are remnants of that entryway that was demolished at some point to make way for the BQE interchange.

  2. I always assumed this little block of houses was from before the building of the bridge which just turned 100. This would mean the rise/hill the bridge roadway starts from is an original topographical feature.

Does anyone know any history about the houses that are being ripped down in the name of “progress”?

Wouldn’t it be nice if the bridge had the same sort of beaux art triomphal arch on the Brooklyn side, not just the Manhattan side?
