Streetlevel: SarahJames Speakeasy

We stopped by yesterday at 217 Pulaski in Bed-Stuy, where SarahJames, a new speakeasy, will open on Saturday. The cozy space upstairs—a converted two-bedroom apartment—certainly has the secretive ambiance of a speakeasy. Jeffrey Rathgeber, who manages the business side of things at SarahJames, also showed us the downstairs area, where he plans to display local artists and have an intimate lounge space for locals. For the full menu, the handiwork of head chef Dakota Freeman, check out the review at Eater. As for the speakeasy part, we asked Mr. Rathgeber what makes SarahJames a speakeasy in this day and age, and he replied: “Well, if we were a real speakeasy, we wouldn’t open in a bright yellow house with so much publicity. But prohibition is over.” SarahJames will be open daily starting at six and ending when people leave. Oh, and you don’t need to arrive wearing flapper caps and Oxford bags, but don’t forget the dress code. GMAP
