After sitting untouched for many months, work is beginning again at 360 Smith Street, the Carroll Gardens development on the corner of 2nd and Smith that galvanized the community into seeking new zoning rules and a landmarks study for the area. From a note sent out by an employee in Councilman Bill de Blasio’s office: “A new partner has joined the 360 Smith team and they will resume construction of the project in the very near future. They plan to commence preparing the site for work [yesterday], including some general clean-up of the excavation and some preparation of the site for the continuation of construction. It is anticipated that construction activity will move into full-swing by the end of August or early September.” Last November the BSA voted to let construction of the project, which is also known as Oliver House, proceed under outdated zoning rules that allow for a height of 70 feet instead of 55 feet.
