dock-street-school-0609.jpgYesterday afternoon the City Council Land Use Committee voted 17-4 to support a rezoning at the southern end of Dumbo that would allow the developer Two Trees to construct a 17-story mixed-use building that would include both luxury and affordable apartments as well as commercial space and a new public middle school. The vote was by a larger margin than expected and was unusual for the fact that it went against the wishes of local City Council member David Yassky; Council Members Avella, Goia and Barron joined Yassky in voting against the project. “The Brooklyn Bridge is a national treasure,” said Avella. “It should be protected — that is the bottom line. Gus Sheha, president of the DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance, echoed the sentiment when he told the Brooklyn Paper, It’s clear that this committee today sold the Brooklyn Bridge. I have to vote yes…because it’s in the best interest of the community overall, said Committee Member Robert Jackson. Two Trees’ Jed Walentas told the paper he was “pleased” with the outcome. The final Council-wide vote is expected next week; early handicapping puts the odds in favor of the proposal passing.

  1. bkre- be that as it may, I also see lots of others on this site indulging in namecalling and insults. there seems to be an awful lot of self-defined proto psychologists posting here and I don’t care much for them either. I probably take it more to heart than most. I was taught to stick up for myself and defend myself- sometimes too much so, I’ll grant you that. I’ll take the free advice- and I’d like to see how many others take it was well.

  2. Yeah – I’ve heard you use the “I didn’t start it” excuse when you’ve gotten into tiffs with folks on this site before. Whether it’s true or not, it sounds like an excuse a 4-year old would give. And the parent of that 4-year old would say, “I don’t care who started it, I’m ending it”.

Just because someone else started it, doesn’t mean that you can’t be the bigger person and either ignore it, or at least not join in on stooping to ad hominem attacks. As I reader, I think the comments tend to get tedious when they turn into name calling between 2 commenters who are probably completely mature and civil folks in real life.

Just some free advice. Take it for what it’s worth.

  3. bkre- I never get pissed off without a good reason. I made a generalization, based on my experience and perceptions. I have no problem with people disagreeing with me. Others did agree. I do have a problem with people who insult me for my opinion as idisagree did, and then I got a gratuitious slap from 11217 who had nothing to do with it and whom I’ve never had an argument with. I didn’t start it so I’m not apologizing for it.

  4. bkre- thanks for that. (especially after the beating I took on the Gehry thread 🙂

It may be a shock to some but I really am not a preservation only person. Yes I love old houses and brownstone neighborhoods. But I don’t see why in NYC we can’t have it all. We need really good city planners though- soemthing I don’t think NYC has. And truthfully this building is not going to destroy the bridge- I’ve lived near Walentas projects when i lived in Brooklyn Heights. I have a lot of respect for his work and his community approach.

I’m admitting to being a lib in many things but not a kneejerk one. I’m much more pragmatic than i may come across. I hate extremism on both ends of the spectrum and I really do appreciate what you just said.

  5. bxgirl – i normally (admittedly) put you in the box of knee-jerk liberal who is automatically anti development and pro-anything that claims to be preservation minded. Kudos to you for seeing through the psuedo-preservationist arguments of those who oppose this project and also for reminding me that I can’t go around over-generalizing and packaging up real complicated people in neat little boxes.

  6. I’m with sam on this one. Walentas did his homework and Dock St. seems like it will bring added services and a school. This building is not going to detract from the beauty of this bridge- the Brooklyn Bridge overwhelms everything. and I happen to love the mash up of buildings around the base. I love the feeling you get on the access ramps of breaking free of the streets and soaring over the city.

  7. I agree that the opponents to this seemed like loons. Rich loons. Selling the Brooklyn Bridge? Puhleeze!
The bridge will block views of the bridge but only from private apartments at 70 Washington St. and other tall DUMBO buildings. The effect to the public’s views and ecperience of the Bridge will be minor. At the first Council hearing the memebers had to ask which was the new building when they were shown the contextural drawings.

Charles Barron who is one of the biggest scoundrels on the Council voted agaisnt it. I wonder what the back story is there. A tiff w/ Tish? A couple o’thou from his admirers at 7o Wash? The fact that he voted agaisnt it, is enough to make me be for it.
