CB6 Doesn't Buy Carroll Street Hardship Claim

The developer behind 580 Carroll Street, the modern-looking project designed by Enrique Norten, failed to win the hearts and minds of the Community Board 6 Land Use Committee last Thursday night when it showed plans for three additional townhouses the developer says it needs to build in order to make the project financially feasible. The developer headed into the meeting with a couple of strikes against him—there have been some structural issues during the initial stages of construction and the modern design of the main structure has ruffled the feathers of the traditionalists in the nabe—that he wasn’t able to overcome. I don’t feel they proved anywhere near the minimum needed for a variance, Committee Chairman Peter Fleming told The Brooklyn Paper. The architect says it will revise the plans based on comments from the session in anticipation of a vote on June 10 by the entire board.
