hubbard-0109.jpgThe Landmarks Preservation Commission designated five new landmarks yesterday, among them the Hubbard House (shown here in its pre-restoration state. The house was built by a Gravesend carpenter named Lawrence Ryder in the 1830s using a traditional Dutch framing known as “H-bent construction.” The house retains an exceptional amount of original fabric, said LPC Chairman Robert Tierney. Also in the mix: The Elsworth House in Staten Island.

  1. Kudos to John Antonides, the owner of the Hubbard house. That one would have been demolished in a few years if someone didn’t rescue it (as happened to other Gravesend gems). John has petitioned the LPC for years, glad to see his hard work and persistence have paid off.

  2. You have the wrong picture. That’s the Elias Hubbard Ryder house. The one that was designated yesterday is the Nelly Hubbard House, built by Lawrence Ryder. (Confusing, isn’t it?) The correct picture is in the PDF that you’ve linked to.
