It’s a little hard to believe that within a year something as loud and harsh as the site today will be as quiet and gentle as waves of amber grain native grass, pictured at right. The grass photo is one of the sources of inspiration for our presidential nominee landscape architect, The Organic Gardener. Way back in Week 17, we showed you examples of his work in Brooklyn. This week we thought we’d share a sketch (work in progress) for the courtyard landscaping. The courtyard is on Bond Street. Two buildings are accessed via the courtyard, which will be fenced off along the property line at the street.

One of the neat aspects of this idea are the pilings as seating. It’s reminiscent of docklands, the likes of which can be seen in the Gowanus Canal and on the Brooklyn waterfront. The courtyard needs to be functional: provide clear walking paths from entrance to exit and to the trash receptacles. There should also be some seating, some greenery (though turf is to be avoided), and a pleasant atmosphere. We are still trying out ideas so we can’t promise you’ll see this one come to fruition but your thoughts are welcome. Meanwhile, we’ve got less than 25 piles to drive at the site. We won’t be finished before Barack accepts the nomination, but we should be done before the Twin Cities rhetoric heats up.
