Now Open: Eton
205 Sackett Street; Carroll Gardens
This Carroll Gardens spot opened yesterday, offering free samples of dumplings and “shave ice” to the neighbors. Their hearty dumplings — stuffed with pork and beef, chicken and mushrooms, or lentils, mushroom, and tofu — cost $3.50 for five, and can be dipped in a selection of house condiments, such as ginger black vinegar and sweet-and-spicy plum sauce. Their freshly shaved ice is priced at $3.75 for standard flavors (like pineapple, mango, guava, lemon, or strawberry) with an extra charge for premium flavors (passion fruit, lychee, li hing mui, and green tea) — and there are even a few sugar-free options. Toppings include fresh fruit, condensed milk, and red azuki beans. When the weather cools down, they’ll also be offering hand-pulled noodle soup. The shop will be open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 11:30pm.

Ryan Skeen Heads to the General Greene
229 DeKalb Ave. (at Clermont Ave.), Fort Greene; (718) 222-1510
According to Grub Street, Ryan Skeen, formerly of Manhattan’s Resto is helping out chef Nick Morgenstern at the General Greene, which opened this week in Fort Greene: “The two men are looking to make the General Greene a neighborhood staple for what they are calling ‘high-quality American comfort foods’ and ‘classic-minded cocktails.’ At the very least, the desserts are bound to be great; Morgenstern is one of the most talented pastry chefs in town.”

Applewood’s Cool News for Bacon Lovers
501 11th Street, Park Slope; (718) 768-2044
“One of Applewood’s desserts last night was a deconstructed apple crisp with a generous scoop of BACON ICE CREAM… For those who drool at the thought of bacon ice cream, it was all that you’d want. Lots of applewood smoked bacon flavor that was perfectly balanced with the creaminess of the ice cream (gelato?) — I doubt this is a long-term thing (but it was new last night so it’s probably around for at least a week) so call before you go.” [Chowhound]

After the jump: A Department of Health scam in Kensington, where to get a drool-worthy nutella-and-ricotta calzone, and news on the Chocolate Room, Clover Club, Pomme de Terre, and Greenpoint’s best eateries…

Department of Health Scam in Kensington
“Last Thursday a city health inspector named Etibar Aliev was arrested for soliciting and accepting a $500 bribe and a bottle of liquor from the owner of Green Pavilion restaurant [4307 18the Avenue] in Kensington, Brooklyn and was arraigned in court the next day… Soon after he was arrested, fired, and charged with numerous counts of corruption. If convicted he faces seven years in prison.” [Eater]

Toby’s Public House: Home of Nutella Calzone
686 Sixth Avenue, between 19th and 20th Streets; (718) 788-1186
“Planning ahead is important at Toby’s Public House. While the brick-oven pizzas are tasty, don’t you dare fill up prematurely. And don’t go alone. Sweet tooths should plan around the $13 calzone dessert, stuffed with Nutella and fresh ricotta… So massive, the calzone needs a metallic pizza round instead of a normal plate… Serious Eats New York editor Zach Brooks said it best: ‘this is a gross abomination in the best possible way.'” [Serious Eats]

Quick Bites
According to the Times, the Chocolate Room has opened its doors at 269 Court Street in Cobble Hill… The Times also visits Clover Club and Pomme de Terre and points out the best Greenpoint eateries.

  1. Eton is great! Stopped by over the weekend to grab a few dumplings and some shaved ice. As for the wait, it wasn’t that long. Who cares? I much prefer waiting for something that is cooked to order than have them grab a few soggy, cold, stale dumplings that have been sitting out for hours.
All three dumplings were delicious and surprisingly light tasting. Great combinations in the mixtures.

The shaved ice idea is fantastic!

Exactly what we need in the neighborhood, more places where love actually goes into the product.

Good luck to the wonderful couple that runs this place!

  2. You know when you go to an Asian neighborhood, go to a dumpling stand and get some delicious food for little cost and little hassle. That’s not Eton at all. Incredibly disappointed. I’ve never waited so long for 5 measly dumplings in my life. And when they arrived all I could think is I could have gone to any decent supermarket, gotten a sack of dumplings and cooked them quicker on my own. They were quite mediocre and not worth the trip.

Interesting idea, but am baffled. Has anyone who works there actually worked in a food service job at all.

FWIW, I’ve gotten Banh Mi faster from Hanco’s on a slow day.

  3. I have to say the Clover Club was done very very tastefully inside. Now i agree about the Bouncer but I have not seen a nicer interior than that place. That said I am excited about the dumpling place in Sackett st.

  4. Gotta agree on the Clover Club bouncer thing.

ADVICE for Clover Club since I’m sure you’ll read this:

You’ve been criticized already on many blogs for many things. I have not even beenso I won’t judge. But as a local and a bar enthusiast, I’ll say I -will- be in and have plenty of yuppie dollars for you.

But please, PLEASE ditch the bullshit, Manhattan style bouncer in a suit lameness at the door. I know you have to check IDs and all but this is NOT Brooklyn, unless you are trying to emulate Bay Ridge or Brighton Beach nightclub cachet.

    YOU ARE TRYING TOO HARD.
