While not our finest moment in terms of production quality (we shot out the window of a car on our cheapo family video camera under tight time constraints), if you’ve never had a chance to see inside the Brooklyn Naval Hospital, which is at the corner of Kent and Flushing Avenues, you should still get a kick out of this one. As was announced last week, the hospital grounds are going to be turned into some sort of media campus.

  1. A really interesting film, but one minor {and pedantic] historical point–an 1846 house CAN’T be French 2nd Empire style. Louis Napoleon came to power as President of the Republic in 1848 and became Emperor[Napoleon III] in 1852.

  2. do you really think that if ‘the rest of us Brooklynites’ had access to these spaces, they would be nearly as pristine?

No, they would have been completely destroyed.

It’s the lack of access that has made these spaces so magical.

    Leave them closed.

Of course, I’ve already been on the open house tour…

  3. I’ve taken a bike ride through that whole complex and it’s truly astonishing. There are these GINORMOUS structures that I believe were used for the construction and repair of battleships. The area by the hospital is totally gorgeous and it’s a real shame that it’s just a wasteland. Would be nice if the rest of us Broolynites could enjoy it.

  4. Cool. I really wish the Navy Yard would have public tours. I’d pay $10 to be able to walk around, even if you couldn’t go in to everything. They could easily turn the morgue into a tour headquarters/rest rooms/staging area. I don’t find that morbid. It’s the living you have to worry about.

  5. Fascinating stuff, I always wish I had access to inside the Navy Yard for a peek, and you’re giving it to us. Also appreciate your knowledge of architectural styles and the historical info you share. Of course the best question is: what business will use the morgue for office space? Creepy-cool. Thanks.
