A few moments ago, Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Quinn joined Navy Yard head Andrew Kimball, its chairman Alan Fishman and Beep Markowitz to announce the creation of a new Historical Center at the site of Building 92 along Flushing Avenue. The city will be kicking in $10 million to create the center (while another $5 million is raised privately), which will be developed in partnership with the Brooklyn Historical Society. The project includes the restoration of Building 92 (see photo on the jump) in addition to the construction of a new 25,000-square-foot building; the anchor tenant for the new building will be the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment. The two structures will share a small parking lot and entrance on Flushing, the first step in the Yard’s effort to engage the community outside its walls.
