We were reminded of the post about the Pacific Street mess when we passed by the sidewalk closure on Navy Street last week. Unlike the situation in Prospect Heights where nobody’s taking responsibility for a neglected public space, it looks like the city is doing something about the situation outside the Navy Yard. (At least, we assume it’s the city. Could it be the Navy Yard?) We’ve got no idea, though, whether the project is just a clean-up of the existing situation or whether there’s something more ambitious like a bus stop island planned. Anyone know? GMAP
The retaining wall supporting that sidewalk is crumbling. The Navy Yard (using City funding) is replacing the retaining wall, which includes redoing the sidewalk. There is a bike path planned for this street too, but I don’t think it’s included in this project.
No bus stop island. There’s a bus stop on the other side of Sands Street.
It’s all part of a much bigger project to move around the DCAS and Tow Pound buildings that are on the other side of that wall in order to create more development sites for new industrial buildings in the Navy Yard. It was all announced at a big press conference about a year ago.

I don’t think it is just a clean up. I think the city is putting in a bike path alongside the navy yard. this may be it.
