The building that used to house the JRG Fashion Café at the corner of Flatbush and Pacific avenues has mostly succumbed to the Atlantic Yards wrecking ball. Construction crews have demolished the bulk of the property—which is reportedly slated to be an open area at the base of Miss Brooklyn—aside from the structure’s façade. Before closing at 177 Flatbush earlier this year, the Caribbean-themed JRG struck a deal with Forest City Ratner to serve food and drinks at the future Nets Arena. The former restaurant is not the only building feeling the Atlantic Yards heat right now: Demolition has also begun at 546 Vanderbilt Avenue, and workers are still in the process of tearing down the parapets at the former Ward’s Bakery building. Full demolition of the Ward’s building is expected to start within the next three to four weeks. Looks like Forest City is gearing up for a busy fall—anyone got the skinny on what’s next to go?

  1. This a prime example of how Ratner is working with the community. I’m sure that JRG will double its proceeds once (not if) it begins selling food at the Nets arena. In this age of diversity, it’s nice to have an array of options at professional sporting events.

And I’m certain that 99.9% of people who decry the alleged displacement of small businesses in the footprint, never set foot in the original JRG before it was demolished.
