sidecarexterior.jpgWhile Mr. B is out of town, we thought we might bring back an old feature that was a favorite on the Brooklyn Record — the Food & Drink Round-Up. This weekly post focuses on openings and closings of Brooklyn restaurants, bars, and markets, and also points to any interesting reviews we come across. Would you guys be interested in seeing more of this stuff, or is it a bit too off-topic for the Brownstoner crowd? —KZ

DeCoursy’s Sidecar Opens in the Slope
560 5th Ave between 15th and 16th
“Run by our friend Bart (ex-O’Connor’s) and his brother Johnny (who I believe used to man the raw bar at Blue Ribbon Brooklyn), Sidecar [pictured at right] is making us regret our move to Clinton Hill… DMR went with a burger and I was about to order the Vietnamese pork sandwich, but then my mouth opened and ‘fried chicken’ came out. The meat was tender and juicy and the crust nicely seasoned and crunchy. I was a big fan of the ‘succotash’ served on the side, and not just because of the pieces of bacon that were sauteed along with the vegetables.” [Clinton Hill Gastronome]

Rumors Fly at Cafe Scaramouche
524 Court Street at Huntington Street, Carroll Gardens
“When he asked if [Cafe Scaramouche was] closing, the woman behind the counter said that the space had been purchased by ‘the Blue Water Grill folks’ (I assume that means B.R. Guest)… Does anyone have any idea what B.R.Guest would do with a place like that? Maybe a small outpost of Dos Caminos? It’s in a bizarre part of the nabe with little foot traffic.” [Chowhound]

Slim Pickin’s at Opening of Carroll Gardens Farmers Market
Carroll St between Court & Smith Sts.; Sundays until 4p.m.
“Price seemed to be the biggest issue with most people. The fact that there was no summer fruit to be had was a sticking point as well. But by far the biggest sin, according to my Italian neighbors, was that the farmers showed up without fresh tomatoes. Gasp!” [Pardon Me For Asking]

After the jump: Schnäck attack at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Egg extends its hours, the best Brooklyn bar to pick up a member of the British Royal Navy…

Schnäck-izing the Brooklyn Bridge Park Beach
“Harry Hawk, having created a burger and hot-dog haven at Harry’s at Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City, is attempting to re-create his magic in Brooklyn Heights… Brooklyn Bridge Park Beach, home of the Floating Pool at Pier 5, is currently being serviced by Hawk with Stahl-Meyer hot dogs and draft Abita root beer, but Hawk confides to us that he sees his concession ‘expanding in a Schnäck-like direction.’ ” [Grub Street]

Egg Now Open Past Noon
“Sparky’s has moved out of their 135 N 5th St location in Williamsburg; it’s now all Egg, all the time. Egg’s now serving breakfast till 3 and has added a lunch menu. Contemplating dinner, initially a couple of nights per week.” [Eater]

British Fleet Flocks to Montero’s
73 Atlantic Ave. at Hicks St., 718-624-9799
“For members of the British Royal Navy on the two warships at the pier, [Montero’s] became something more than just a bar last week. ‘It’s the “duty watch bar,” ‘ Mark Smith, 41, a petty officer sitting in Montero’s on Sunday, said with a thick accent that was part British and part Rolling Rock. ‘It’s an expression. The nearest pub to the ship is the duty watch bar.’ ” [NY Times]

  2. 11:37 is exactly right, its too early for most tomatos, some early ones are coming in now but those are breeds very similar to what is availabe at the fruit and vegetable stand in February, who wants that. The real deal local sweet and savory heirlooms should start hitting by the end of the month, some of the “black” tomatos are already here but not many in the market at Union Square or Grand Army Plaza. Patience. Same thing with the farmers market, these things take time.
