The quality of life meter is about to take a huge tick upwards in one corner of Bed Stuy. Within the next month, a new cafe serving coffee, pastries, sandwiches, etc. will be opening at the corner of Clifton Place and Nostrand Avenue. Owner Lisa Bayer, who’s lived down the block for the past two years, hopes the shop, which she’s calling Tiny Cup, will be a lot more than a place to eat. She’s outfitting the cafe with a bunch of comfy couches and wifi access in the hopes that it’ll become a neighborhood gathering spot. Bayer’s shooting to open Tiny Cup’s doors by July 4 weekend. 1. i work at tiny cup and i must say that both Lisa and the cafe itself are both great.

anyone reading this should definitely stop in for the coffee which is really good there.

the pastries and the foods are also very well made and very tasty.

as for the person who wrote about needing better schools and programs for kids, that’s a great thought of course, but you need a place like tiny cup to add something new to the neighborhood. tiny cup is a refreshing addition to a place filled with like 6 million bodegas, fried chicken spots and liquor stores — oh, and nasty ass DUNKIN DONUTS.

AMERICAN RUNS ON TINY CUP!!! LOL

  2. Best of luck to Tiny Cup, its a really good looking spot. Foods good too. I definitly prefer to give them my money than Dunkin Donuts. I think its a big benefit to the neighborhood just to be able to spend your money where you live.

  3. Hey, whoever wrote “yay, diversity for white people!”…would you care to grab coffee sometime? I’m serious. I’m as white as they make ’em, moved to Bed-Stuy earlier this year, and am trying to get some kind of reading program for the kids going because I think it’s insane that the Macon branch library is *still* closed. (And somehow the “Fall” re-opening promise smells like bullshit to me.)

Anyhow, I ask to meet up assuming you’re black and a longtime neighborhood resident, and not some crazy white troll man worried that rising property values in Bed-Stuy spell trouble for his investment in Park Slope. Hope this finds you well.

Best of luck to Lisa and Tiny Cup.

  4. Yeah, I’m of two minds about it. I went there on the 4th and it was super awesome and the owner was very cool. But it was also full of white people — like, I’ve never seen that many non-black people in one spot in Bed Stuy at any one time. Were they all just in hiding, waiting for a place like this to appear? Also, I sincerely hope that the black residents of Bed Stuy don’t end up feeling like they can’t patronize Tiny Cup. I do agree that it def. will add to the quality of life, but only if ALL of the nearby residents can feel welcome there (and I acknowledge that any feeling of non-belonging will be there own doing, and not that of Tiny Cup, I’m sure, but still…), rather than a very small minority (Pratt kids and intrepid whites?).

  5. Great! Let’shope we will have more shops coming to the area, there are few vacant stores on Bedford Ave and in the area that hopefully will not become groceries or hair salon (example are corner of Bedford Av & Greene and Bedford & Lafayette)

  6. cafes DO make for a better quality of life, because people can go out and enjoy themselves right around the corner from where they live, and put money into the community. DUH..it goes without saying that schools, kids programs, etc. should continue to improve, but look at the bedstuy y! that place is amazing. this whole area is getting better, and it’s happening fast. all of my longtime neighbors agree. just try to maintain a bit more optimism and don’t be such a crab.

  7. i love how a goddamned tiny little CAFE makes quality of life in bed stuy better. what about better schools and programs for the kids? or even a decent dry cleaner for fuck’s sake??? we don’t NEED cafes. yay, diversity for white people!
