What Can Orange Do For You? Branding the IBZ

In the Brownstoner Photo Pool on Flickr, The Real Janelle posts this photo of one of the brand spankin’ new signs have been popping up around Williamsburg and Greenpoint in recent days. The Williamsburg-Greenpoint zone is one of 16 areas around the city (see the map on the jump for the others) that the Mayor’s Office for Industrial and Manufacturing Businesses has designated in an effort to “foster high-performing business districts by creating competitive advantages over locating in areas outside of New York City.” To alleviate the threat of displacement that has hung over many businesses during the recent decade-long real estate boom, the administration has committed to fighting any efforts to rezone the IBZs for residential usage; it also provides a one-time tax incentive of $1,000 per employee to relocating firms. Does anyone know how successful this program has been at keeping industrial businesses in the city?
