Curbed broke the news yesterday that Thor Equities had obtained demolition permits and would begin demolition on Friday of the much photographed and blogged Revere Sugar Refinery in Red Hook. We don’t suppose anyone’s heard about specific plans for the site? None are filed yet.

  1. Well it certainly is cool looking and it would be fun to keep it. I believe a previous poster had pointed to successful conversions of industrial areas in Europe, that left some of the industrial structures in place. But lets face, its not going to happen here.

What’s more upsetting than it being torn down is who is doing the development – Thor Equities – the same company who is about to destroy Coney Island. Imagine what horribleness they have in mind for this great area of Red Hook. If you don’t think so, go look at their website http://www.thorequities.com and if their “properties” don’t give you the willies, I don’t know what will. Combine that with some of the statements made about turning Coney Island into a Bellagio like destination and you begin to get an idea on their “taste”.

Thor Equities and Forest City Ratner have become the primary developers and shapers of Brooklyn in the 21st century. How have we allowed this to happen? Go look at their horrible portfolios… go walk through the Atlantic Malls.

EDC and the politicians need to align themselves with quality developers who will design and build projects that the people of Brooklyn can be proud of, not ones that make them retch.

The days of any development is good development in Brooklyn should be long gone… unfortunately that is the mindset of the powers-at-be.

  2. Anyone know that Thor plans for the site? We had heard over the summer a big box store…but then there was a potential condo component to be added. BUT, that would require a variance at the BSA.

We had hoped they were just holing onto it for the right time to flip it (as I have heard they do often…hopefully with CI).

    Any info would be helpful.
