We hadn’t spent a lot of time South of Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights before so we were quite impressed when we headed down Union Street between Kingston and Albany on Saturday. In particular, this row of turretted brownstones struck us. We can’t think of another line-up like them. Can you? GMAP

Here’s another shot of some houses on the same block:

  1. if you want to see some architectural gems, try President Street between (I am guessing here) Nostrand and Kingston – there are 2 blocks of GORGEOUS houses – mansions really – supposedly built for the doctors at Kings County Hospital. Like Prospect Park South and other areas of ‘Victorian Flatbush’, it really gives you a sense of when Brooklyn was its own place, not an adjunct to Manhattan.

  2. I know someone with a turreted brownstone, and the space inside the turret is inaccesable and totally wasted. It’s probably just framing and roofing materials. Too bad, you could do some interesting things with that space. It would be cool to open it up, insulate the heck out of it, and cover that with real beadboard or just planking, and hang a really cool chandelier from the center point. Instant castle.
