Hollywood East Bulking Up in Outer Boroughs

Pretty soon, all the movie stars in Boerum Hill won’t ever have to set foot in Manhattan. The folks behind Silvercup Studios in Long Island City laid out an ambitious development proposal yesterday that would include building two residential towners as well as numerous film production-related buildings on a six acre plot of land on the East River just south of the Queensboro Bridge. With five television pilots and two studio movies currently being shot in New York (and more than 250 films in total in 2005), film executives evidently think the time is right for further expansion. Steiner Studios, located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, is the site of the largest sound stage in the boroughs. The Silvercup project will face its first public review on April 6 at Community Board 6 in LIC.
