Lower Level: Kitchen Updater

Here are a couple pics from our nearly complete kitchen. All the appliances are in and working, plumbing is all hooked up, and the lights are on! The problem is, now that the lights are on, we don't really like them. In an effort to be energy conscious, G and I selected compact flourescent downlights for the kitchen, without really evaluating the quality of the light they give off. Now that they're in, we can see that the light they give is too cold and antiseptic.

Hi Peter:
Have you experimented with CFs? THere are a number of different light qualities, maybe playing around would salvage them.

Kitchen is looking nice. Do you have storage on the back of the island or is the doors just for show.
I know its not very green to say this but CFL lighting doesn't belong indoors. Its a very unflattering light for human skin (or cutting vegetables or pretty much any indoor activity)

I wish people would not repeat that (now ancient) canard about CFLs!
3000K is warm white. 2700K is ever warmer and may be a little yellow. Either is very close to incadescent unless you're a fanatical artist.
Do NOT get full spectrum, they're trashy light. Or 5000K, cold white.

Hey Peter, The Kitchen is looking good. It must feel good to be making some progrss. Is G going to work her tile magic on the backsplash?

Peter, is that real butcher block? I always thought for a real working kitchen, BB is under-rated.
I'm gonna have a section of mine done in solid BB.

Looks really good- We're also going to use Ikea wood block counters. Just curious- how much space is that between the end of the island and the wall/radiator?

Wow, it looks great! I like the unusual use of tile on the side of the island.

how is the stove being vented?

Looks good. Really CAN'T wait to gut mine!!!
From where did you get the cabinets? Are they Ikea?

It's looking great! So glad you did the flush cooktop and separate oven--it looks soo much better than the ubiquitous stainless range with some weird curved back panel.

All Ikea, all the time. Cabs, wood countertops, built-in oven, cooktop, microwave, sink, soul, you name it.
Yes, we have storage on the back of the island. The idea was stolen from G's sister's house in Brussels.
Stove is vented through the microwave/exhaust vent contraption. Vent goes up, takes a left through the cabinets and out the back wall of the house.
Backsplash is done, we used our leftover white subway tiles from the bathroom. We're now wishing we had used some color, but oh well. We've got some ideas for other ways to bring color into the space.
So it sounds like maybe we need to just experiment with the CFL bulb type to get a nicer light. Man, I hope we can get something better in there.
