The First Grout

This was our first grout. Wall niches. We used a sanded gray grout, same as we used for the floor. The hex tiles get the gray grout, mostly because we heard that is better on the floor for high traffic, as opposed to white which is supposed to be hard to keep clean. But as the gray grout dried, it became lighter and lighter itself. It's almost white anyway. Is grouting hard? It's just sort of a pain in the ass, as G learned here. I learned it later when I tackled the shower. Wax on, wax off.

Looking good. Love the detail of matching the floor in the niche. Really makes it pop.

You don't have to use sanded grout for the wall tiles unless the gaps are extra wide. Also try using cheese cloth to do the final cleaning as it doesn't hold any extra water that can mess up your grout.

Southstuy blog girl here--Just want to say --you guys are a total inspiration. The Basket tile --that was already placed in squares for us was daunting--it was our first foray into grouting and sealing (we didn't know what durarock was when we bought the tile and we grouted BEFORE we sealed instead of after)--hopefully our skill set will improve before we start on our own space. ANYWAY--thanks for blogging.:)

When we started we didn't know either! Not that we are experts now, but at least we know how the process works. We had a lot of lead up discussions about tiling with a lot of people, and bought that book, Tiling 1-2-3 (4-5-6) at Home Depot. That book makes things look too easy, but at least it gives you the steps.
The folks at Nemo recommended sanded grout for the hex tiles. We did non-sanded for the wall tiles. Next time we tile I'll give cheese cloth a shot, although we have placed a moratorium on future tiling. Still, there is a half-bath to go downstairs, and I want to put in a subway tile backsplash in the kitchen, once we get to it.
