Dam Doors

There is quite a cool collection of doorways in Amsterdam. And the the Dutch are not afraid of paint. Inside many old ornate houses and on exterior doors I saw a lot of super high-gloss paint being used that had the effect of making details and wood mouldings look like candy. It was pretty cool. It made me want to do the same chez moi, but I have a feeling they are using oil paint that we don't really have access to here.

Love a high gloss door!
You can replicate this look by taking your door to a autobody shop and having him paint it with the same paint used in cars. Its a beautiful finish that will last decades without much more than a wipe down.

That's funny, I took my first trip to A'dam last Feb and I had exactly the same observation: I loved the hi-gloss doors. I took pictures, too. I kept telling my wife that I wanted to bite them- can't explain it, but something about the finish makes me grind my teeth. In a good way.
I'm basing this on absolutely nothing at all, but I remember being in the Janovic paints on 6th ave and Spring and seeing swatches for some special paint from Holland that was glossy and super-saturated. You might wanna give them a call and inquire.
Since I'm commenting here, let me say that the tiling you're doing in your bathroom is sublime; I'm totally envious.

Yes, yes, it's called Fine Paints of Europe and Janovic sells it. Our neighbors in PH painted their front doors with it in a wonderful shade of dark green. They did it about 5 years ago and it still looks fabulous. When we repaint our front doors, we will definitely be using this stuff. I grew up in London where most people also use high gloss for exterior doors. It's a great look.
