Holes, Redux

This is the floor where the bathroom used to be on the lower level. We have never removed a toilet before, but G downloaded a great step-by-step instruction guide from Home Depot covering exactly that. Step by step it worked. The toilet's out. The floor is out. This why we need some salvaged wood - what was under the bathroom is rotted to hell.

You should rip out the entire floor of the bathroom. Then you should "sister" the beams or put new ones in. Then put your new subfloor in. You may want to rough in new plumbing and move fixtures where you want them at this point. Then on top of the subfloor you can put a Backer Board and then tile away!!

Yeehaw! Actually, this is going to be kitchen. So we're trying to find old pine subfloor boards to match the rest of the room. We've taken up the rest of the bathroom floor at this point. The old boards underneath were totally rotted out. We are cutting out the rotted joists (3-4) of them and replacing them.

Upstairs however, we are trying to decide if the subfloor will be strong enough to support a bathroom - tub, toilet, sinks, etc., or if we need to put down backer board and tile.

Its probably not a good idea to have the wood subfloor as your floor for the bathroom (as seen by the damage). You want to keep the water away from the wood. IF you choose to have a wood floor in the bathroom, then you might want to consider many many layers of polyurethene or a clear resin to protect the wood.

if you need a good size piece of plywood for a subfloor, email me. just pick it up. my crew left it. It's not anything elegant. just use it for a subfloor.
