A Brownstoner reader is looking for some advice on occupancy and use of a two-family house. It was previously used as a three-family. The reader wants to know if it’s OK to retain a door between the floors of one of the units — a duplex — and rent out only half the unit, keeping the other half for storage.

They don’t want to do anything illegal to put the status of the building in question. Please provide any words of advice you have below.
