From the Forum: Is Common Staircase Access to the Roof Required in a Multi-Family Dwelling?
A renovation in a four-family home is leading to some homeowner questions about the code requirements for common stairs.
A renovation in a four-family home is leading to some homeowner questions about the code requirements for common stairs. The project architect says that there must be a common staircase going all the way up to the roof, but the homeowner believes code would allow for a common staircase to the third floor and then a ladder to the roof. This option would allow them to expand the size of the fourth floor unit by including the hallway into the space as well as give the unit private roof access. Is a common staircase to the roof required?
Please chime in with any advice.
